The last weekend in August 2012 was a whirlwind. I had tickets to see Duran Duran at the new Ovation Hall at Revel, Atlantic City's newest place to go to lose your shirt. We found out while we were eating dinner that the show was not going to happen because Nick Rhodes, the keyboard player, was hospitalized for exhaustion. Pardon my snark here for just a second, but really? Exhaustion? The man stands behind a Macbook and presses keys. If they told me he was hospitalized for carpal tunnel, or a hangnail, or hell, even arthritis, I'd totally get it. But exhaustion?...more
This awards season you are getting to see even more of Adele. Normally you would only see her at the Grammys or Billboard Music Awards, but thanks to her killer pipes and James Bond, she is making appearances at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. While her look is pretty tame compared to the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, Adele knows how to knock 'em dead with a few little details. Some fashionistas out there feel that she is playing it "too safe," but I like to look at as her knowing what works for her, and what doesn't.
Danny, Donnie, Joe, Jon, Jordan. Any girl of the 80s (and some boys) need no further introduction. To the non-Blockheads of the world, we're of course speaking of THE boy band - New Kids on the Block or NKOTB....more
There's something special about listening to music on vinyl that digital can't replicate. I'm not sure if it's just nostalgia or if the music actually sounds better as the record turns under the needle. There's nothing like thumbing through album after album, admiring the enlarged cover art that doesn't come on iTunes. Pulling a record from its sleeve and placing it onto the player has become one of my favorite daily rituals. Here I've put together a list of 12 albums you should own on vinyl -- one for each month of the year!
The 70th Annual Golden Globes did not disappoint. (Well, at least not for the winners and those of us watching from the couch...so many upsets!) Amy Poehler and Tina Fey may well go down as the most successful hosts in the history of the show -- the jokes were on point, the deliveries were killer, and the chemistry between those two ladies is impossible to deny (although was it just me, or did Kristin Wiig seem just the tiniest bit icy?)...more
I've always been a music junkie. When I was a teenager, I was a teeny bopper, enjoying bands like Duran Duran and Bon Jovi (hey, I still love Bon Jovi!). I went to a crazy number of concerts both in high school and college. Music was the backdrop for parties, studying, working out, driving in the car. I have bands that I've loved for years, and ones I've only loved a few years. But all of them touch me in some way; they stick. ...more
I woke up one morning early in November and felt some weird desire to listen to Christmas music. It scared me. I tweeted it, hoping to release the desire into the world and have it disappear. Didn't work.
I have never hated Christmas music but I have been known to rant about radio stations that switch to holiday music programming that lasts for weeks on end. And, I've also been known to rant about hearing the same canned Christmas music in store after store after store....more
