American Idol Cancelled After 2016

After 13 years of catapulting unknowns into the bright lights of the music world the show will end after next season. I'm sad but not surprised. The only parts of the show I enjoyed were the auditions and Hollywood Week. After that, I no longer watched and didn't care who won. On the same note (no pun intended) I really like the judges now. Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. bring a lot to the table and give excellent advice and constructive criticism to the contestants. ...more

The struggle to stay on key

My son was singing in the bathtub. This is not new. What was new was what he was singing. There, echoing off the bathroom walls, in his slightly off-key, boys soprano came the classic lyrics of:...more

Interview: Director Brett Morgen on Creating 'Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck'

In 2007, Courtney Love gave filmmaker Brett Morgen the keys to the kingdom — the kingdom of Kurt Cobain. Cobain’s clothes, toy collection, journals, artwork, videos, recordings, and other possessions were all being kept in a non-descript storage facility. Now Love, who’d been impressed by Morgen’s documentary about film producer Robert Evans, The Kid Stays in the Picture, wanted Morgen to use Cobain’s artifacts as the basis of documentary about him. ...more

Inspirational Property

It was late summer 2013. I was at a popular brunch spot for a lively celebration of a friend’s 40th birthday. I had just had a baby 3 weeks prior and was feeling a little lost from myself between the sleepless nights, the constant feedings, and the ignited neediness of my other two children, both of them home all the time, waiting out that last hot month before school begins. And I don’t mean to add all that in as though it were a feeling only a new mother could have, as though we had the market cornered on displacement....more

Celebrating the Diverse Women of Indie Music

I—like many of us here at LD—am a big fan of women in indie music. Jenny Lewis, Lady Lamb, and lots of other brilliantly talented ladies with flawless bangs rank among my all-time favorite artists, and were originally to be included when I decided to make a playlist of women in the indie scene that everyone should be paying attention to....more

The Truth About Online Dating

After my wife and I untied the knot, I had to put myself back on the market. If you thought adolescence was awkward, try posting pictures of yourself online so people can instantly judge and dismiss you.I’d rather be back in high school and go up to a girl sweating through my Lynryd Skynrd T-shirt with a face full of acne and take my chances.Women say guys rarely look like their picture, but I can assure you it goes both ways. Whoever said the camera doesn’t lie never went on a date....more
