Some teenage obsessions don’t burn out or fade away

No matter how old we get, somehow the teenager within us finds ways to shine through. For me it was tonight, watching “Rock of Ages.” Was it good? Probably not. Could I turn it off? Not a chance in hell. Will I watch it again? Well, I might just buy the damn thing and I only own one other DVD....more

Following the band, suffering the mom-guilt....

The last weekend in August 2012 was a whirlwind. I had tickets to see Duran Duran at the new Ovation Hall at Revel, Atlantic City's newest place to go to lose your shirt. We found out while we were eating dinner that the show was not going to happen because Nick Rhodes, the keyboard player, was hospitalized for exhaustion. Pardon my snark here for just a second, but really? Exhaustion? The man stands behind a Macbook and presses keys. If they told me he was hospitalized for carpal tunnel, or a hangnail, or hell, even arthritis, I'd totally get it. But exhaustion?...more

Please Don't Stop the Music

I've always been a music junkie.  When I was a teenager, I was a teeny bopper, enjoying bands like Duran Duran and Bon Jovi (hey, I still love Bon Jovi!).  I went to a crazy number of concerts both in high school and college.  Music was the backdrop for parties, studying, working out, driving in the car.  I have bands that I've loved for years, and ones I've only loved a few years.  But all of them touch me in some way; they stick.  ...more

Meet Twelve Year Old Singing Sensation: Grant Landis

It’s not every day you meet a twelve year-old kid who can carry a tune, much less one who can do so while enjoying a game of billiards.  Unless, of course, you happen to be lucky enough to live in Joplin, MO and invite Grant Landis and his dad over to your house. Even though our family has been friends with the Landis Family for several years now, I was still unprepared for the brief a cappella performance I witnessed last April as Grant and my daughter competed in a game of pool....more

Why the Fever?

The kid can dance. The kid does some great charity work. The kid managed to rope in one of Hollywood's hot young starlets (though I haven't the slightest clue as to what she's ever starred in). I will give this kid credit for all that but nothing more. In an attempt to catch Bieber fever Tuesday night, and to make myself feel insecure in hopes of cutting back on my outrageous carb intake, I watched the Victoria's Secret Fashion show. Neither worked....more

My Top (And Bottom) Ten Christmas Songs of All-Time

As I was driving this evening, quite literally, through the holiday bustle, listening to the holiday music channel on my satellite radio, I started to daydream. Don’t worry –- I stayed in my lane. But I got to thinking about all the Christmas songs I love, and, conversely, the songs for which I don’t have quite as much cheer....more
