Back to School an Alternative Way

I love learning. The easy way. The hard way. All of it. The only lessons which ever really bother me are the ones about opportunities which offer more than they realistically can. Even though I'm guilty of doing the same, I consistently set my mind on taking stock of what is realistic and authentic for me, and I make it a goal to embrace and communicate that. Generally speaking, the same is true for situations and individuals which disappoint me, so I respond with compassion. One glaring exception to this is the public school system. ...more

Hybrid Education: A New Approach to Learning in Northwest GA

Hybrid cars have recently moved from space age fiction to every day reality, but what about hybrid education? While the term may not be familiar throughout northwest Georgia, it is gaining popularity, and there are opportunities to experience it within our region. I know. My 6-year-old daughter is enrolled at a hybrid school Education Play Station (EPS), located in Adairsville, Georgia....more

Fantasy Football Loser

Guys, I’m going to be honest, I’m way too competitive. Not just in the sense that I want to win Monopoly or a game of volleyball. I’m constantly competing with anyone – even strangers- who have the terrible luck of running into me on a given day. Just going to the grocery store is an array of game playing for me. I make a grocery list that has everything in order of store layout. There is no going back and forth through the produce section just to make it to the milk aisle and notice I forgot the asparagus....more

9/11: Talking with your kids about terrorism

Parents prepare for certain questions when their children begin elementary school. My husband and I were no different, role-playing routines for the inevitable “Where do babies come from?” and “Who is this Santa character?”But, nothing prepared me for a most serious inquiry.“Mommy, do you know what happened on September 11th?”...more

Religion, Idiots and The American Dream

Religion seems to bring out the worst in people.  Folks are shoving their bogus dogma down American throats and there is no end in sight. Kim Davis is the quintessential “good ole girl”. Since the June 26th ruling by the Supreme Court guaranteeing the right of marriage for same-sex couples, she has gone on a one-dumb woman rampage to protect the holy sanctity of marriage....more

How much are you willing to risk for your job?

I'm a firefighter. I work 24 hour shifts, every third day of the month. I'm there to help you in the middle of the night when everyone else is at home sleeping in their beds. Whether it be for a heart attack, a stroke, a fall, or even something non-emergency as a ride to the hospital because you have no other way to get there. I come to your call and beckon, giving up my need for sleep and sometimes even missing meals. I am there for you 24 hours, 7 days a week, Holidays and weekends included. I serve you.In a metropolitan area near Atlanta, Georgia, a fire department is looking to mandate firefighters to work eight shifts of overtime over the course of a year to make up for the loss of employees. Eight shifts might not seem like a lot to you, but it ends up being approximately one month of extra work to a firefighter. Shifts that they don't want to work or cannot work due to childcare issues, part-time jobs, or taking care of a loved one, but are being forced to work....more

Innocence and Loss

Mom, Why Don't We Have the Day Off to Commemorate 9/11?

We lay cuddling in my bed, our nightly ritual after bathing, putting on jammies, reading and discussing the school day. I’d put her brother to bed a few minutes before her, then we snuggled in under the big comforter and she picked a subject for us to discuss – another ritual. The sky is the limit, and the only caveat is time: ten minutes to be exact. Then I put her into bed with a kiss and an ‘I love you’ and a promise to meet up with her in my dreams that night....more
