Too Old to Drive? 90 is Not the New 70

A driver in his mid-90s was trying to parallel park on a busy street in Palo Alto during the height of the lunchtime hour this week. The driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake and slammed into a pedestrian and four people seated at tables outside of a restaurant. Two of them needed surgery, the others had cuts and bruises. The driver could just as easily have killed them all. The police are calling this a tragic accident and, pending further investigation, don't plan to file criminal charges....more

Keeping up with Mrs. Jones

I know lots of moms. Some are crafty, some are incredibly active and others are unbelievably excellent cooks. Then there are the ones who make the whole work/life thing look ridiculously easy. It's that last set of moms that get to us. The ones who seem to have the perfect children, house, marriage - the ones that make us question how we are lacking in our own lives....more

Brain cell transplant restored memory and learning in mice with Alzheimer's

When it comes to making gains in the fight against Alzheimer's, it doesn't take much to get me excited. Baby's First Day at the Beach, Mother Child O/C painting Margaret Aycock NR

Some of my fondest memories are those spent at the ocean on the Carolina coast.  I often revisit those times with paint and canvas.  Going to the beach usually involved extended family, always a new baby or two, and lots of grown-ups to watch the joy of first experiences with sand and sea....more

A Room With a View

The car sped through the narrow road, dodging oncoming traffic and narrowly missing cars in front it... and the kerbside. The driver, my late cousin's boyfriend drove, maniacally, totally unaware of the havoc he was causing in the nervous system of its passengers. He was driving completely unsafely, blissfully unaware of road signs and the white middle line dividing the road into 2 lanes. Hooters sounded and he carried on talking, a non-stop narrative of the history of the countryside and its attractions....more

The Family Vacation We Almost Canceled Was the One We Needed the Most

Last June, my dad's youngest brother hatched a grand plan. The three brothers and their families hadn't vacationed together in quite some time. My husband, two sons, parents, brother, and sister-in-law perfected the multi-generational vacation over the years, and as my uncle got to witness it in person for three days last year, he decided 2014 would be the perfect year to really put the multi in multi-generational. We booked two houses as soon as we could, and we began planning out the most epic of vacations. We all happily looked forward to June 21 when we would begin a week of pure relaxation and family togetherness. Then my beloved grandmother, my father and uncles' mother, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014. ...more
