Shark Cage Diving: Helping or Hurting?

Shark cage

Just thinking about it gave me an adrenaline rush. Take a boat ride out into “Shark Alley.” Get in a cage and stay there until a great white shark – yeah, like the one in “Jaws” -- comes by. Then… what? Hang out? See if the shark tries to take a bite out of my leg? Cool!  Read more >

Flights & Money: What Determines Airline Prices?

Airline Seats

After the holidays are over, I get anxious to think about traveling I want to do just for me! Oh, sure, I'll take my family along, but it won't be to visit relatives or drive across the state of Iowa. I start thinking of riding on a jet plane. And then I look up flight prices and groan -- right after the holidays is the worst time to look at your savings account. Why do I do it to myself?  Read more

Volunteer Crewing 101

Crew

What are the three unavoidable expenses of travel?1) Transportation2) Accommodation3) FoodNow what if, in order to not pay the first two, you were forced to spend your days in tropical splendor visiting the remote places completely inaccessible to common travelers?  Places that see, maybe, 100 'outsiders' in a year?  These are simply not places you can get to any other way but on a small sailing yacht. BBQ

In an earlier post, I covered traveling on the cheap while vegan. However, based on some of the things I find across the net (sad stories of how so-and-so had to start eating fish, or gave up veganism because of travel) it's clearly time for travel tips for staying vegan.  Read more >

Boomers Abroad

Boomers

From 1946-1964, 4,000,000 babies were born, thus constituting the largest and, therefore, most powerful generation of this century: Baby Boomers.  Now in our 50s and 60s and looking at the remainder of our lives, I find that the majority of us boomers are asking the question, "Is it enough?"  Did we accomplish our goals or enjoy all that we set out to experience before we wil  Read more >

Behind the Scenes: A Travel Writer Press Junket

Champagne

When I mention that I write travel features for magazines and newspapers, I invariably hear one of two responses: “If you ever need someone to come along, call me!” or “That’s what I’ve always wanted to do.” Everyone, it seems, yearns to be a travel writer. You get paid to eat at a passel of restaurants, indulge in fancy hotels, and snare lots of swag, right?  Read more >

CHINA: Then and Now

China McD's

What a difference 28 years and an Olympics make!In 1983, I stepped off a somewhat rickety Air China plane onto the tarmac of the Beijing International Airport – and practically needed a flashlight.  Read more >

Traveling Abroad with Your Dog

Jersey

The French love dogs. At least that's what I decided after viewing the final episode of “Sex and the City,” where Carrie, sitting in a café, glances over at the diner seated next to her—an enormous bull mastiff. So, when the opportunity arose to spend two months on the Côte d’Azure with a side trip to Paris for work, I decided to bring my shih-tzu, Jersey, with me. We flew Continental—our favorite airline—to Paris, where we were scheduled to switch to Air France for the flight to Nice.Jersey on the Riveria.  Read more >

Station Wagon Summer Vacations

70s Vacations by The Walter Family.

Now that we are (technically) adults - some of us with children of our own - it's easy to forget our own childhood perspectives on summer vacations. This post is a delightful time machine taking us back to time before the mini-van, DVD players and seat belt laws. Enjoy!  Read more
