Why Are There So Many Stories About Girls and People of Color on Banned Books Lists?

It’s Banned Books Week, which hits especially hard for creators and fans of diverse literature. I learned last year that one of my favorite summer reads, the Young Adult novel Eleanor & Park, had been called “dangerously obscene” by the Parents Action Council in Minneapolis....more

Two Women Made the MasterChef Finale, So Why Were Their Shoes The Focus?

This week, the two finalists from Season 5 of MasterChef competed for the title of America’s Best Home Chef. After first being chosen from a pool of thousands, these extremely talented, self-taught women withstood three months of grueling challenges to become the last ones standing. And, incidentally, they joined other women from the international MasterChef shows when they became part of the first women’s-only finale on MasterChef U.S. ...more

9 Great Books to Inspire Creativity

I have a pool. With small children, this is a blessing and a curse: A blessing because my family enjoys swimming, and a curse because my family enjoys swimming—which means I need to be vigilant and sit by the pool all day even when I don't feel like swimming. ...more

Hey, U2, Get Off Of My Cloud

Me in 1991: I spend the night camped out on a sidewalk in the tiny town of Palatka, Florida. The small downtown record store was one of those hidden treasures with an efficient staff where you had a chance to score a spot in the front of the line and therefore a chance to get tickets through their Ticketmaster system. I was fifth in line and I held my power position. Tickets went in a few nerve-wracking minutes.  I scored! I am filled with ecstatic joy from my badassery.  ...more

"Transparent" on Amazon Is Your Next New Fall TV Binge

After suffering through the last season of The Fosters, ABC Family’s Little House on the Prairie treatment of parenting while gay, I was desperate to watch a queer series about queers and families made for grown ups. In other words, I wanted to see some boobs! No, that’s not really what I meant …. to say out loud. In other words, I wanted believable characters and nuanced plot lines and funny dialogue that was not taken out of my father’s shoebox full of cliché one-liners. ...more

Mothers Are So Embarrassing

It was my Meat Loaf moment. A few weeks ago, I took my two daughters to see a Broadway show starring Sutton Foster (who may not be a household name across the country, but for my two theater-obsessed kids is pretty much the coolest thing ever), a two-time Tony-winning singer/actress/dancer, and star of the late, lamented ABC Family series "Bunheads." After the show ended, we lined up with all the other theater geeks by the stage door to get her autograph. ...more
