How to Survive Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease as an Adult

I think I'm going to put this down as a milestone on Facebook. You know right after "got engaged," "got married," "had a baby," and now... "contracted Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease." Because, I have to tell you, right now, it feels like a milestone. Don't believe what you read when it says that it's a "mild" condition. Apparently adults aren't really supposed to get this. I'm not really sure how I was chosen for the honor. I'm pretty much a germaphobe. Oh, you know the one. Touch a grocery cart (get out hand sanitizer), pay for groceries (get out hand sanitizer), put groceries in car (get out hand sanitizer). And I practically scrub my son once we leave any public place. I think you get the idea. But somehow, Lil Man and I have contracted this horrible little illness, and I decided to share with you a few things that I have learned so far. ...more

It's Such A Bummer About Body Hair

"If you don't shave your armpits," she beamed, "it gets all wavy like a man's."We all turned to the back of the room and laughed at the strangeness of our classmate's statement. We'd been getting A Talk about personal hygiene - specifically, how to not smell awful after our eighth grade PE class. Mrs. Loo had just finished extolling the virtues of baby powder. Goodbye Glasses! I Had Laser Eye Surgery

One month ago, I did something I thought that I would never, ever do -- I let a doctor shoot lasers into my eyes. Up to and during my laser eye surgery, it was scary and I questioned my sanity. A month out, I can tell you that I believe it was worth it and I don't regret it. Not even a little bit. I've been asked lots of questions by friends and family over the last few months. I thought I'd try to round up those questions into one post. Here it goes. Why did you get laser eye surgery?...more

Breastfeeding: My Most Rewarding AND Challenging Feat

August is National Breastfeeding Month, and the first week marks World Breastfeeding Week. A few years ago, these events would have passed without significance, but after having my son and experiencing a long and rewarding breastfeeding relationship, I feel compelled to encourage and support other breastfeeding mothers and breastfeeding mothers-to-be. ...more

5 Ways to Avoid Chub Rub When You Run and Race

Last year, I ran my first half-marathon. This summer, I started training for my next one in November. What does summer running bring on? Chub rub. OW OW OW OW. Whether you're training for a fall race or just trying to avoid the bra/skirt/underwear hell that is 95-degrees-and-humid, I've got some ideas to end your chub once and for all. ...more

It's Time for a Frank Discussion on Vaccinating: Don't Be a Jerk

At the same time that Jenny McCarthy is learning that people are attracted to people who vaccinate their children, Kristin Cavallari is being hailed as the next Jenny McCarthy for her public statements on how vaccines cause autism. Meanwhile, back here on planet Earth—where opinions never turn into facts, no matter how fervently we believe, no matter how personal the loss or the triumph—the growing number of parents who have chosen not to vaccinate their children is in part responsible for a resurgence in diseases long laid almost to rest. ...more

5 Reasons to Forgive Yourself Today

It’s hard to forgive others when you haven’t forgiven yourself. Perhaps it sounds foreign, but the root of forgiveness starts within, and once you learn to forgive yourself, forgiveness in general is much easier to implement. I have personally struggled with self-forgiveness in the past, and here are my 5 reasons why you need to forgive yourself today....more

Is "Pretty" A Privilege? Thoughts from #BlogHer14

Being “pretty,” which I define as fitting society’s definition of physical attractiveness, is an odd thing. Writing about it feels even odder, particularly since I don’t feel more attractive than others. For many years, I felt ugly and awkward. I still occasionally feel that way....more

It's a Boy! Unbiased Information About Circumcision

There is a skeleton in the back of my skeptic closet. A gnarly thing, decrepit and long dead. It lived when my daughter was but a babe. During that time, I came across a storm of information about how harmful vaccines could be. ...more

Breastfeeding in Public Has Made Me a Better Mom

When my first son was born, he spent several weeks in a NICU and was fed breast milk through a feeding tube. Once we were able to bring him home, learning how to breastfeed was unbearable for both of us. So after four difficult months we quit. When my second son was born he latched on within minutes. And 11 months later he hasn’t let go. Lucky for him, I am a SAHM now, which means that he has unfettered 24-hour access to his favorite binky: my boobs. And since he has emotionally bonded with my chest it feels unfair to me to deny him when he initiates his need to eat or his desire to be comforted when he is over tired or hurt. ...more
