Beloved children's author E.L. Konisgburg died April 19 at the age of 83. She was one of only five authors who won the Newbery honor twice. She won it for the first time in 1968 for what is probably her best known novel, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler....more
Happy National Haiku Poetry Day! I remember being absolutely infatuated with haiku as a child discovering the vast world of poetry. I would count syllables on my fingers -- 5, 7, 5 -- and write whatever came to mind. I still love a good haiku, which is why I loved Erica's post at What Do We Do All Day? If you want to introduce your kiddos to the fun world of haiku, check out this list of fun books.
Every Wednesday, the mobile library parked around the corner, its desultory young driver oblivious to my excitement as I climbed the steps up into the back of his van, an improbable space transformed by shelves of books into what Jefferson may have envisioned. I think I fell in love with books there. It may as well have been Aladdin’s Cave, its unexpected treasures waiting for anyone who ventured inside.
National Library Week, celebrated this week of April 14-20, always takes me to random places in my memory. As an avid bookworm, it's no surprise that I am a supporter and lover of libraries. The libraries of my life have supported me over the years, as I have grown through various stages and phases of my life. I can't even begin to play the "what if" game, to consider what my life might have looked like without the series of libraries in my life. I am thankful and blessed for this trip through the stacks of my life....more
With all the news about spring blockbusters -- I'm looking at you Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness -- I had kind of forgotten that there was a new Hunger Games movie on the horizon. Sure, Catching Fire isn't out until November but this is the time when they start releasing teaser trailers and ramping up our expectations....more
One of my favorite ways to relax is to settle into a nice hot bath with a book. Sometimes it's a quick 15 minute break in the middle of my day. Sometimes I fill the tub with bubbles, pour myself a glass a wine and linger. I know, not everyone likes to read in the tub. I found that out when I shared my rules of bathtub reading. Every now and then I'll break my rule about library books but I still hold fast to my rule about electronics! Here are some the books you could find me hanging out with in the tub....more
I somehow completely missed the memo that Bunnicula: The Musical even exists. I love the Bunnicula books. Bunnicula was my favourite vampire -- he just happened to be a bunny. Like Emlyn Chand, I think the books helped make me smarter. I likely won't get to see Bunnicula: The Musical but luckily for me, Elizabeth Willse, another self-professed Bunnicula fan, went to see it.
I am so happy to see April cruising in. Yes, there will be April showers but in my part of the world we welcome those -- it means it's not snowing. I'm also pleased to see April come back because I think I've found my reading mojo again. I told you all about my reading slump and oh my goodness, it was a long one. I think I've kicked it I look at my shelves right now and I want to start reading all of the books.
The miles roll by while I am listening in the car, and I have more ideas for writing than ever before. Seeing these sentences lingering by the dashboard somehow triggers half-forgotten memories, and they rise up in vivid sentences.
