If I'm Not a Homemaker, What Exactly Is My Title?

what am i

I was filling out an application for something the other day and I found myself stuck at the OCCUPATION section. In the past, I’ve always filled out either N/A or homemaker. (Even though for some reason this title causes my brain to short circuit. I mean, the word itself feels like a cop-out.) Now, I’m not saying that staying at home isn’t work or that the parent at home shouldn’t be showered with expensive gifts daily, I’m just stating that the word itself sucks. This post is NOT about the never-ending debate of who is a better mother depending on if they work or not. This post is about what I should be writing down for my job. What, exactly is my occupation?  Read more >

Mother's Day

“Contrary to popular belief, Mother's Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed w  Read more >

Painting my vagina without painting my vagina

My new series of paintings started out as a look at how infertility is marginalized in our society and turned into an exploration of how many behaviors and lifestyles are put down based on a gender binary that was established arbitrarily.  Read more >

Professing My Love for Anne Bishop’s THE BLACK JEWELS TRILOGY

About two years ago, it occurred to me that I’d been writing a fantasy novel for a long while, and yet I’d somehow forgotten how to read fantasy. Sure, it was there in the back of my mind—a very young Eva devoured sci-fi and fantasy books, while the adult Eva had developed an addiction to urban fantasy vampire novels. Still, I’d ventured somewhat from the roots of the genre.  Read more >

E Is for Eye

“Eye” is not only the essential human organ of sight: “one of a pair of spherical bodies contained in an orbit of the skull” (Dictionary.com). It is also a superb metaphor for the visionary skill of the poet; and, at times, of focus for the spiritual life as well.“The eye altering alters all,” wrote the poet William Blake. And in Matthew 6:22, Jesus said that “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.”  Read more >

Zoe's Tribal Dancing

When I first knew Zoe, I was the one who belly-danced. I took belly-dancer for great exercise and camaraderie in the late 1970s. I never danced professionally, although I did act as a "wardrobe mistress" to a couple of dancer friends who did.  Read more >

The stupids

Every so often as I'm working, I come down with a big case of the stupids. It starts out with my aesthetic choices somehow feeling off. Suddenly, every brushstroke becomes a painful reminder of how unqualified I am to be a painter. From there, the feeling overwhelms every aspect of my art practice, from my thoughts about individual paintings to my plans for larger projects. I see that my blog is full of useless nattering--my whole website even. And I know that everything I say to people is dumb, meaning that I can't be much smarter. In other words, I'm stupid.  Read more >

Zoe's New Feminism

Zoe Artemis considered herself a New Feminist. It's a concept I have long held as my belief. Many of those who were active in the Feminism of the 1970s grabbed onto the idea that to be equal, women had to be like men. Some women chose to dress in gray pantsuits; some even wore ties, thinking that would level the playing fields in the male bastions of business, medicine and law.  Read more >
