Gallowayed: How I Ran, No Walked, No Ran My First Half-Marathon

When I was a freshman in high school, I went out for track. I hadn't actually run at all before I did it. It was sort of a lark. The first day of practice, the coach told us to run an easy mile. All the other girls headed out, talking to each other as they went. I followed along as best as I could, but never having run a mile before except for the Presidential Physical Fitness Tests, I thought I might die and ended up back at the track gasping for air, my lungs on fire. Then, as I would almost every single practice until the weather warmed up, I coughed until phlegm came up, thoroughly embarrassing myself. So I quite shocked myself on Saturday when I ran my first half-marathon. ...more

Health Secretary Nominee Sylvia Mathews Burwell: Would a Man's Appearance be Criticized This Way?

So if you haven't heard yet, my friend and Office of Management and Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell was nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services, replacing Kathleen Sebelius. It's a huge, demanding, pressure-filled responsibility, and Sylvia's experience and skills are a very good fit for the position....more

Mais non, Monsieur, I Would Not Like France's Email Ban

I'm aware that a lot of people are jealous of the new labour agreement signed in France that will go into effect if approved by the Labour Ministry that states that workers cannot check their work email nor can their employer contact them after hours.  Though there isn't a firm cut-off time, the hour is set to ensure that employees can relax the full minimum regulated time of 11 hours while they're away from work.  So no checking email on the weekend, no quick phone call from the boss while you're sitting down to dinner, and no text messages received right before you go to bed. ...more

I Am Drowning in Lists

My son and I are at the grocery store and a family passes us. The family has this conversation:"What do we need again?""I don't know —I think cheese.""Don't we have cheese?""It might not be the right kind."My son hears all this and says to me, "Those people are not list people, Mommy."I am a bit proud. And somewhat terrified. ...more

Joining Forces and The Elizabeth Dole Foundation to Focus on Military Caregivers in 2014

Yesterday I learned some sobering statistics about military caregivers from Joining Forces. 5.5 million Americans are caring for ill or wounded service members and veterans. Of those 5.5 million, 1.1 million of those spouses, parents, and friends are providing care to a US veteran who served since 9/11....more

TMS: The Target Marketing Scheme Strikes Again

I was at Target yesterday doing my weekly rounds when I heard a conversation that was the epitome of the Target marketing suction that gets you to spend way too much time and money in that place.  Luci and I were browsing the Dollar Spot, looking for something to waste her only dollar on, when two 20-something ladies came strolling over. ...more

11 Scriptures to Pray for Your Child

Sometimes, I wonder if we made a mistake purchasing our house eleven years ago. It's not in the best school district, we could have found a better "deal," we are rapidly outgrowing it. However, when I think about the godly women placed on this street and what they have taught me, I know that we are in the right place. One sweet neighbor taught me not to just promise prayers. If I ask her for prayer, she prays. Right then. She also taught me about the power of using God's Word to pray, inserting our husband's or our children's names into the Scriptures as we pray. ...more
