Supreme Court Upholds Obamacare (Mostly)

Chief Justice John Roberts was the deciding vote in today's 5-4 Supreme Court decision to essentially uphold President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act as constitutional. The much-debated health insurance mandate was upheld, as well, with the court deciding that the penalty a citizen must pay for not buying insurance will be a tax....more
My reaction was about the same as yours, Denise. I found a good, non-partisan website that ...more

Feminists, Please Stop Trying To Make Me Renounce Feminism

I was nineteen the first time I decided that feminism was a load of crap. I was a co-president of NYU's Women in Film association, had nearly completed my minor in Women's Studies, was one of only nine women in my class at Tisch's prestigious Kanbar Institute for Film and TV, and I decided that the whole thing was kind of a giant crock that I wanted nothing to do with....more
Great post.  Expresses and articulates so much of what I haven't been able to put into words. ...more

Have I Become Racist Against White People?

I recently got into a little disagreement on Facebook, through a comment thread on an acquaintance’s page. I left a comment saying that people who fly confederate flags are generally not the kind of people who a black man (or woman) might want to be caught in a dark alley with. My point was not so much that flying a confederate flag makes you a racist, but in my experience, they usually are. Then I got called a racist. By a white guy from Mississippi. Which, as another commenter on the thread pointed out, was kind of humorous, seeing as I am also white....more
Momsoap, I also loved your post. It's rare when race is discussed in a heart-felt way. ...more

How SCOTUS Ruling on Arizona Law Could Hurt Domestic Violence Victims

[Editor's Note: The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the controversial "Show Me Your Papers" clause of Arizona’s immigration law disappointed women’s advocates. Women's eNews explains how this one part of the law could still prevent immigrant women from seeking help for domestic violence. --Grace] ...more

Will the Election in Egypt Improve Women's Rights? Or Make Women's Lives Worse?

[When I scanned the photos of the Egyptian election, I noticed it immediately. Only a few women were visible in the ecstatic crowds. It was mostly men, shouting and raising their fists. And it made me fear that this historic election will leave women out. A newly released Gallup Poll of Arab countries,in fact, finds that men and women want some form of Sharia law in government. What will this mean for women’s rights? ...more
I am really concerned about this, too. A new government that excludes women and a situation in ...more

Supreme Court Strikes Down Most of Arizona's SB 1070

In a victory for the Obama Administration -– or is it the Republicans? –- the U.S. Supreme Court rejected most of Arizona’s SB 1070 anti-immigration law, while upholding the most controversial “show me your papers” clause, one week after President Obama announced that his administration will stop deporting some young undocumented immigrants....more

Kanye West, Jay-Z, Oprah, and Reality Show Vixens: Do We Need Black Role Models?

A couple of months ago, Oprah's Lifeclass: The Tour made a stop in my hometown. I was completely unaware about the stop until two days prior to the event, when I got a frantic text from a friend. “Girl, did you get your tickets to Oprah’s Lifeclass????” ...more

The Real Way to Get More Girls into Science (as Opposed to Sexist Videos)

[Editor's note: Last week the video “Science, it’s a girl thing” drew a storm of outrage by women scientists everywhere—including Emily Willingham on BlogHer. Thankfully, the European Commission yanked the ad and even apologized. But it did raise an important question: Why are girls and women still underrepresented in certain fields in science? ...more
I agree. We need better ways to encourage women to go into science. My granddaughter just got ...more
