An American Tragedy

What else can you possible call it? With respect to Theodore Dreiser,  no fiction writer could dream up this mess.  It would be a great story, if only it weren’t real. I didn’t intend to write about it…but I also didn’t think John Edwards could sink any lower than he already had.  I love words but I don’t have any to describe him.  Watching 20/ 20 hit me wherever is below below the belt.   And maybe I feel this personally because I know the fragility of someone with cancer....more

Calling Loudly, “J.D. Salinger”

In 1941, J.D. Salinger had seven stories rejected by The New Yorker. Apparently undaunted, he submitted an eighth the same year, "Slight Rebellion off Madison," which was accepted. BUT, it was about a disaffected teenager (can you guess his name?) nervous about the war, and in the wake of Pearl Harbor was deemed unpublishable - so did not see print for another five years....more

However, we quickly realized trying to condense from a dual income family to a single income family in nine months would be an overwhelming challenge. We crunched the numbers and crunched them some more...they were crunched just about every way possible....more

State Of The Union: We Need Help With Child Care Expenses

I’ve read a flurry of articles in the past week to accompany data that show changing gender roles in earning power and marriage.  Many of these articles accompany flip headlines and amusing photos—images of the 1980’s comedy “Mr. Mom,” or tales of high-earning career women marrying men far less high-powered, simply because, apparently, women now can. This is typical media hype: the truth is, in most two-parent families both partners have to work, the burden is more or less shared, and it’s tough....more
