Yes, I'm an Apple fan girl. But I wasn't always one. Before OS X, Apple's Unix-based Operating System, I was a hardcore PC. I could track down missing dlls, edit the OS registry files, install and configure firewall and virus software, and format, partition, and reinstall the Windows Operating System lickity split. Then one day while I was trying to remove spyware from my system I realized that I was a busy person and didn't have time to dink around with this stuff anymore. I was a college student at the time and I also worked full time....more
My mother still listens to cassette tapes and would gladly play her 8-track tapes if her player still functioned. Yet, she has embraced the iPad. For her, the iPad is primarily a way to check the stock market and manage her e-mail, even when she travels. E-mail is just a single touch now, making it incredibly easy for her to check multiple accounts at once. Her partner loves to listen to non-mainstream ethnic music via Pandora, watch news videos on his favorite TV news station , and read his home town online newspaper. They enjoy the iPad because they don't have to type much to access their content, they don't have to sit in front of the computer to get online and they can use it to stay in touch when they travel or visit....more
Let the festivities begin! Our middles are a bit swollen from the Thanksgiving food-fest that went on this past Thursday. And if you, like us, had family that lingered well into the weekend then you too continued to stuff more than the turkey! As Thanksgiving gave way to “Black Friday”, the traditional brick and mortar retail sales extravaganza, we made the decision to steer clear in favor of “Cyber Monday.” “Cyber Monday” is TODAY, a day where you can enjoy a bevy of discounts from the comfort of your own home....more
As you may have gathered if you read my other blog posts, I write about aging, getting older, the second half of life.....and what it means....real-time.
I have become acutely aware of a glaring defect in my personality. Although I long to do certain things...some of which I mentioned earlier, I seem to have drifted through life never having embarked on many of these dreams. Now, I am not saying that I am actually called to such. As I wrote in an earlier blog...I am not talking about riding my bike across the United States....more
For the last year or so, I really haven't watched that much TV. There are a number of reasons for this and none of them are virtuous (obviously). Firstly, I live in the middle of nowhere, so my TV aerial only has a patchy reception meaning that most channels (coincidentally all the ones I want to watch) have a fuzzy screen. Secondly, I live in a listed building, so building regulations wouldn't allow me to put up a satellite dish that would provide me with a clear reception for all channels. ...more
Oh! It is that time of year again! Time to start your Christmas shopping… Okay, if you are smart you will have already started your Christmas shopping. Or if you are like me you will be fresh eyed and ready for Black Friday. I am apart of that crazy group of people who wakes up at 6 am ready to peruse the mall for deals. I’ve done it every year since 6th grade. I will go in my sweats and glasses hunting down hot clothes and electronics. But, this post is about finding the perfect gift for that perfect woman in your life.
After spending what I felt was entirely too much wasted time on Facebook, I had the brilliant idea to deactivate my page the yesterday. You can deactivate temporarily or permanently, just with a click of a button. I went the temporary route because of course, I have no intentions of leaving FB forever *whodoesthat?*. ...more
These days a lot of artist are concerned about having their art ripped off online by hacks, but should they be worried? Art = idea + technique + person. And the "person" part of this equation makes real art inimitable....more
Though I’m not participating in NaNoMo this year, I am furiously attempting to finish my memoir/book of humor essays. I have every intention of doing it next year. My plan is to have my book fine-tuned and completed by August 2011 so I have a manuscript to take to BlogHer 2011 in San Diego, CA. Bloggers out there should definitely try to make it to this conference (and if you do, let me know because I’d love to meet you in person). ...more
This is the story of how I dumped copyright and fell in love with free culture. The idea of copyright produces a rat race mentality in me. The whole concept stresses me out and makes me feel like I’m competing with everyone else. Free culture, on the other hand, allows me to compete just with myself. ...more
