Found myself writing a long post on a yahoo group about why and what I do to secure my email inbox against catastrophic loss, and thought it was worth boring to tears sharing with my blog readers. So what do you do? What's your solution or insurance policy for your email?...more
About a year ago, we heard reports about the webcam on an HP Touchsmart PC failing to track a black man's face using the state of the art tracking software built into the camera. However, when his white coworker stepped into the picture, the tracking resumed as it should. HP explained the problems as follows: "The technology we use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose," Welch explains. "We believe that the camera might have difficulty 'seeing' contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting."
In its October 2010 issue, Vanity Fair did its 100 "new establishment" people - some of the 100 spots are occupied by teams, others by individuals or duos. The formal name of the list is "the 100 most influential people of the information age." Guess how many women are in the new establishment? A total of 14 women, and of those, six are paired with men, while only eight are recognized on their own, individually. The menz? A few men must share the spotlight in team settings, but those team props simply add to the total number of included men further dwarfing the total number of women. ...more
I like to think of myself as a bit of a techie. I can't write code or anything hard-core like that, but I could set up your home network, install a new hard drive (or any other peripheral) in a desktop chassis, upgrade the RAM in anything, and wipe a hard drive and install a new operating system with no problems (including Linux!)....more
Moms do a lot of things right.
We develop networks of friends to help us in a pinch.
We shift though countless options for our kids (soccer, piano, or underwater basket weaving) and choose with laser sharpness.
And we work efficiently to run our homes, nurture our children and make sure everyone is having a good time with rich experiences.
Marketing like a mother (or father) is about marketing in a way that comes naturally to us as friends and caregivers. To market effectively we need to market authentically....more

My son Leo's life was transformed when a five-dollar raffle ticket turned into a brand-new iPad. I'm not exaggerating. Before the iPad, Leo's autism made him dependent on others for entertainment, play, learning, and communication. With the iPad, Leo electrifies the air around him with independence and daily new skills. People who know Leo are amazed when they see this new boy rocking that iPad. I'm impressed, too, especially when our aggressively food-obsessed boy chooses to play with his iPad rather than eat. I don't usually dabble in miracle-speak, but I may erect a tiny altar to Steve Jobs in the corner of our living room....more
