Tell Us About Your Favorite Recording Artist

There was an era not too long ago when the recording industry was a mass medium. It was common for millions of people to like the same rock or pop artists and listen to them simultaneously on a quaint electronic device called a radio.  That's all ancient history now, while we load individual songs onto MP3 players and niche genres have become the norm.  I'll have some indie, alt country, techno, club, dub, fusion jazz, trance, trip hop please, with a side of ska.

For this week's opinion poll we're wondering if there are still any commonalities for music among the BlogHer community.  Tell us about your favorite recording artists.  Are you a rock, pop or country fan?  Did you ever have an unforgettable live concert experience?  When I was a teenager, I saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band at the legendary Bottom Line club in NYC.  The Boss actually danced on my table and the live concert bar was set impossibly high for me at a very young age.

Tell us about your magic music moment by leaving a comment below!

Oh-my-goodness, it is very hard to narrow down my favorites. I love music, both for dancing and listening. I grew up listening to Motown, and artists like The Young Rascals, Arthur Brown. And on the quieter side, though I was still a young teen, I listened in the privacy of my room at home (hidden from my friends), Andy Williams, Tony Benet, Mario Lanza, Tom Jones, and the likes.

HomeRearedChef The Young Rascals were so far ahead of their time it's actually astonishing. They don't even sound dated even today. Another band ahead of its time (Steely Dan, esp Aja album) that made jazz-rock popular for the masses.

Jane Collins So cool! My husband tells me that he has basically everything through Aja, that their music was jazzy/bluessie/rock. Wonderful stuff!

Wow, this is a hard one I am a music lover but listen mostly to rock. Always loved the band Heart ranks #1. Big fan of Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox and Pat Benatar too; support many female artists. Led Zeppelin ranks at number 2 position.

I see at least 2 concerts per year for over 30 years. Hard to pick a favorite concert but standouts have been Bruce Springstein, Iron Maiden, David Bowie, Tina Turner and Annie Lennox for exceptional performance.

Cheap Trick and the Beatles are always number one with me...And this week it's John Waite on the CD player in the car.

Stevie Nicks! No question. Hands down, by far my favorite artist. Her music is real and has a way of speaking to you. She's a story teller and is the best at what she does. I just got to see her live for the very first time on Aug 13th and was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. She inspires more than anyone else ever could. There is not one song I have heard that I wasn't able to relate to. It's like she reads my mind or something. So, Stevie Nicks is my favorite artist and I highly doubt my opinion will ever change on that. No one on this list even comes close.

I've collected so many favorites. I'll just say that if it's female, jazzy, bluesy, or full of heart I probably love it. Nothing on your list comes close.

Virginia DeBolt I knew the list would be woefully inadequate because it is limited to only 10 choices, and musical taste is incredibly fragmented these days. This is a poll where I am hoping people will leave their favorites as a comment, so thanks for your input!

I am actually not a fan of any of the artists in the list of choices. I prefer heavier music generally like Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Evanesence, Tool, A Perfect Circle, System of a Down. I also completely adore and admire Adele.

Adele is absolutely awesome...agreed!

There's just no way this list even begins to cover all my favorites. I have 5,000 songs on iTunes. How about Sarah McLaughlin, Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists, Oasis, Jane Siberry, K.D. Lang, Eddie Vedder, REM, Sia, Bob Marley, David Grey and Toad the Wet Sprocket? And oh yes, I like John Mayer too.
