Summer is over and back to school thoughts fill the air.  We want to know what the BlogHer community remembers about school days.  Maybe you're helping your own kids with homework and a random formula pops into your mind, after lying dormant for years.  Maybe you are still going to school and preparing to write a paper. Maybe you still have nightmares about taking a final exam for which you (inexplicably) did not study for.  School and learning is such a huge part of our lives, we never really stop thinking about it.

Teachers touch the future but we want to know about your past.  We're looking for your favorite subject in school.  Please take the opinion poll below and be sure to leave a comment to tell us what motivated you or terrified you about academia.  We want to know if you had a favorite teacher who helped shape your life.  What was it about your teacher that was so inspirational?

What about Family and Consumer Sciences (Home Ec.)? I loved it so much in high school that I became a teacher of the subject!

My favorite teacher of all time was one of my college professors, a true renaissance man. He had a phD in Physics, was an engineer, and had invented a sort of multi-media presentation hardware system that is apparently still in use today. Some students said he had been a cameraman on the Chuck Barris "Gong Show", but that might have been an urban myth. Martin Klein was an amazing story teller, and that's what made him such an excellent teacher. You wanted a one hour class to last two hours. He was also (I'm not making this up) an ex-Navy Seal who had adopted an actual dolphin trained by the Navy. He kept it in a water corral behind his house in the Florida Keys. I had this wonderful teacher for two classes; Business Writing and Statistics. I wanted to tell him that he was an inspiration. He must have been, because after many many moons, I'm still using statistics to put together this poll! Unfortunately I never got the chance to say anything because he died of a heart attack a month before my senior year ended. If you value a special teacher, let them know when you can. It's one of my life regrets that I never told him he was the absolute best.

A transformative teacher in my life my was 8th grade biology teacher. He was that rare breed of teacher who inspired and fostered a love of learning. He was so passionate about teaching and found a way to make the subject exciting, whether or not you were interested in biology. I looked forward to his class every day. One project stands out in my mind. We had to create a portfolio of marine life. He asked me what interested me most. At the time it was fashion design. My assignment was to design clothing using sea life as my inspiration. It was such a creative and pleasurable way to learn, so different from the typical rote method of instruction. He taught us to think outside the box. Many years later I was lucky enough to see him again and tell him he was, hands down, the best teacher I've ever had. I never became a biologist or a fashion designer, but his impact on me surely made me a better and more motivated student.
