Terry McMillan Writes With a Healthy Respect for Real Life
By TexasRhea on June 22, 2011
I haven't read Terry McMillan's first book, Waiting to Exhale or seen the movie either. So, Getting to Happy was my first foray into her work. And I wasn't sure I wanted to read it, because what do I have in common with older, black women living in Arizona?
Stupid, stupid, stupid me!! I forgot that one of the best parts of reading is learning about other people and other experiences. I'm embarrassed by how narrow-minded I was at the beginning of this book, but I'm really glad I read it, because it reminded me about how there is to life and how much we can learn from others' experiences. The best part about Terry McMillan's writing is how her character experience life... all the ups and downs.
Throughout the story, I felt immersed in these four women's lives. I felt bad for them, I felt proud of them, I felt sad and angry... and happy. Sometimes I had trouble at first figuring out which character was speaking though, because each chapter switched to a different woman's perspective. That was a little disorienting at times.
These four women haven't had it easy. Life has chewed them up and spit them out, but they show the reader how to stay true to yourself and how to work on finding your happy, without dependence on a man or drugs or shopping. We all make mistakes, we all choose the wrong path at times, but it's never too late to correct our bearings and turn the ship around.
Life so rarely has a fairytale ending, a happily ever after, and we need to be able to learn how to get to happy on our own. I don't know about you, but I don't have a fairy godmother waiting in the wings to make my life end perfectly.
I enjoyed this story,in its realness and laying-it-all-out-there mentality.
