Cancer testing isn't exactly a light or catchy topic, but "The Poo Song" has convinced me otherwise. This public service announcement was created by the Scottish government in an effort to get its citizens to take a fecal test to screen for bowel cancer.
The video targets youth – the true YouTube fanatics – urging them to bring this test to the attention of their elders. "Older folk in your family need to watch their bowels," sings a charming Scottish accent. "Cancer can be sneaky, like a ninja on the prowl. So listen to this song and get it through their head to make sure they don't end up dead!"
Using funny YouTube videos to bring attention to serious health problems is proving to be a successful strategy. Consider Canada's anti-smoking campaign that compares social farting to social smoking.
Or Australia's "Dumb Ways to Die" video:
Maybe the best way to convince people to take care of their health is not to wag a finger or resort to scare tactics, but to make them laugh. It sure beats staring at photo of a cancer-riddled lung!
