A Thankful Reflection
By penelope velentzas on December 05, 2012
I often get the question after I’ve completed a 5k, 10k, 1/2 or full marathon, ‘who did you run with?’ Alone is my usual response. It’s hard enough getting myself motivated let alone finding someone to run with. Too much unnecessary pressure. This past Thanksgiving, our town, like most towns, hosts a 5k and I signed up. Exercising in the morning prior to an all day feast is my way to go.
At the starting line on this particular day, I stood there people watching, looking at the cast of shadows across the concrete and thought about how much I enjoy running and what it does for me. It wakes me up—-could take a mile or 3 at times but it gets my blood moving. It also deepens my breath and expands my chest. I then start to look around and begin to notice the complexity of nature and how beautiful leaves and branches are and the interesting posture that trees take as they grow. Often in the summer during longer runs when I get tired, the overarching tree branches and bushes appear to be extended arms reaching out to greet me as I pass. All good encouraging visuals that keep me going.
On this particular Thanksgiving run, as I passed yet another finish line, I stopped to catch my breath and looked around at all the finishers and thought that for some, this may have been the first run—and good for them, for others like me, I have lost count. However many doesn’t really matter. It’s the feeling of getting through it, achieving your goal and taking time to reflect. This is my reflection. It’s my start, my reflection, my pace, my tempo, my race. It’s a blessing.
