Thanksgiving Survival: It's Not Too Late to Plan

It's only a few weeks away. But it's not too late to make plans that ease the annual journey to stuff ourselves on turkey and pie and then, boomerang back where we came from, wondering why we ate so much. There's plenty of great advice on easing your travels.

In case you think it's too late to get a ticket...

Speaking of those who haven't booked, I am starting to see some downward pressure on Thanksgiving airfares. This is the first time that I've seen holiday airfares peak and begin to decline prior to a holiday in at least four years. So the good news is that the average domestic fare, while still above last year by $35, is averaging around $390, that's down from the high over $400 last month. --The Window Seat

If you're making a connection...

Allow longer for connecting flights. Perhaps, statistically, a 45-minute connection works fine most of the time, but the stress starts before you even board the first plane: any delay causes anxiety. Also, the younger your kids, the harder it is to race through an airport to make a connection: not fun for anyone, but much worse for a parent with tots and gear. --Travel with Kids on About

If you're traveling with kids and think it's just a lack of "stuff" that eases the travels...

we've put together the best gear to make travel easier, safer and more fun – at least for your kids!--Celebrity Baby Blog

For general stress reduction advice...

know, I know - more expense…BUT…as much as you love your family, and as much as you can’t WAIT to see them…they’ll get old quick. Someone has an annoying kid, or a drunk uncle - and you’re going to WISH you had somewhere to go to get away from them. Think of this trip as a vacation for you - and find a nice, inexpensive hotel, and give yourself a place to escape from your family if need be. That’s the best stress relieving advice I could possibly give.--TravelBrook

At our house, where we live and breathe travel, what do we do? We negotiate a deferment. With no apologies at all, when mom asks us if we're coming for Thanksgiving, we say this: "Absolutely not! But if it works for you, we will plan a trip to visit the following weekend. That way, we won't burn 50% of our travel hours stalled in traffic/airports/etc and we will have a much more enjoyable visit." Works like a charm.

This just reminded me how close the holidays are. We will be going to Grand Turk ( http://www.grandturktravel.com )  over christmas and I am dragging my feet to buy tickets since I think they will only become even cheaper :)

I usually check for flights at orbitz.com, any other suggestions ?

Thanks, Julie
