These Are Not Your Grandmother's Underpants

Have you heard? Thong underwear is dead! (Oh please, please let it be true!)

Can you imagine a world without whale tails? I think that would be a wonderful world to live in, but the demise of the thong has been greatly exaggerated for years now. I'm not about to get my hopes up just yet.

Of course, the demise of one type of undergarment calls for the rise of another -- and people who think about these things have decided that the new new thing is actually an old thing. (Strange, because this never happens in fashion.) The new old thing is (are you ready for this?): Granny panties.

(Bet you didn't see that one coming!)

The new rise in popularity of the so-called "granny panty" has been blamed, like so many wonderful things, on the TV show Mad Men.

Well, I don't know about that.

I love Mad Men very much, and while I hope and pray that modern America will once again embrace the glamorous styles worn by both men and women on that show, I suspect that this is little more than a pipe dream. We are a yoga pant and khaki shorts wearing nation. I'm afraid it might be too late for us at this point. (So sad.)

Instead, I think that the newfound interest in high-waisted undergarments can be attributed to another new old thing: Corsets. I know "corset" sounds painfully retro but trust me, they're back. It's just that nowadays we call them other by another name. That name is Spanx.

Yes, Spanx. Spanx is wonderful -- it has reminded us that underwear can do more than just wedge itself uncomfortably in your most private areas. Underwear can work hard for you. The thing about Spanx, though, is that it's a bit too much for everyday wear, you know? Most of us enjoy breathing and eating which is hard to do when you're compressed by your foundation garments. And well, as great as shapewear is at shaping, sometimes it's just plain ugly.

So where does that leave us? After experiencing what shapewear can do for you, it's very hard to go back to flimsy little things for everyday wear. So naturally, one turns to more formidable underthings. Underthings that naysayers desperately dismiss as granny panties.

I HATE the term granny panties; it's not a fair way to describe the beautiful things out there today. I believe that the new old underwear is way sexier than the thong ever was. From the luxury to the practical, you can have underwear that gives you just a touch of support and looks and feels sexy. Because sexy doesn't have to be uncomfortable.

What do you think? Have you embraced foundation underwear? Or are you a die-hard thong wearer?

Granny panties are *not* sexy, but honey, are they comfortable. Please. Just like Spanx are not for everyday wear, neither are the slinky satiny lacy ribbons of yummy that are so much fun to wear, for example, with jeans or under your button-down suit like a sexy secret weapon. Lets hear it for the spice of variety!

The thong isn't so bad if you buy them a size or two larger than your regular size. I suspect they are popular more for not creating a VPL than anything else.

I love me some Mad Men but I doubt that's why granny panties are back. If that's the case than those GIANT Man granny panty briefs for guys would be all the rage and I hope I never see that day anytime soon! I think since the economy went into the dumper and people are coping by eating everything bacon I suspect that it's more comfortable to avoid VPL in your yoga pants by wearing a forgiving of tush size granny panty than a thong.

Not that I would know anything about that because I appear 20 pounds lighter on the Internet than IRL.

well i hate that term too, and i dont necessarily like support underwear either. However, I do like a little support in my underwear and there are some women out there that should at least consider it, lol. Unfortunately i dont see high waisted anything coming back so granny panties would be difficult to wear with jeans but great for in a skirt.

I not only don't find thongs comfortable or sexy, they are not the answer to lineless dressing and they let you jiggle too much!

I like this style of panties for 2 reasons, one being that skirts come to the waist as do some pants now and I like to feel tucked in all the way to the waistline. 2 is that it is time to go back to a more ladylike style of dressing. More to the imagination is a good thing. Women are treated accordingly by the way they dress by men, society, and people who hire. Women have more self esteem when they don't give away everything they have in one fell swoop! Let people get to know you and who you are not what your body looks like.

I hate the feeling of wearing a thong. I appreciate the lack of panty lines, but wearing a thong is pure torture. Granny panties? I welcome you with open arms :)

p.s. please only be made of cotton. none of that crazy lace business, please.

I hate thongs, too. Who wants to wear a string up her butt? I've never quite believed those who claimed thongs were comfortable, and I don't find them sexy.

So I hope it is true that the thong is dead. The problem is all that workout wear. What to wear with it? I've found On Gossamer's boy short to work fairly well. But I wouldn't say it was all that sexy.

Sexy, functional, and comfortable isn't easy when it comes to underwear.
