Thinking about birth control to control pcos, THINK AGAIN!
By PaulaRichards on August 14, 2014
From experience and research I can tell you that Provera is the better choice instead of choosing birth control to control your pcos, especially if you are going to be ttc. Here is why Oral contraceptives are not ideal for pcos.
Oral contraceptives or birth control pills work by SURPRESSING OVULATION. The estrogen and progesterone found in the pill decreases the release of GnRH in the hypothalamus. Preventing the release of FSH and LH from the brain which are needed for ovulation. This leads to a estrogen dominance which is proven to incease insulan resistance and mask symptoms of pcos and cause harmful side effects. There is no evidence that these pills shrink cysts or decrease testosterone. There is evidence however that prolonged use can permanently alter hormone balance. There is no guarantee that ovulation will begin again after you stop taking these pills.
So please think again when your doctor blindly prescribes a birth control. ask for a low dose hormone like provera instead that wont affect your chances of conception later on in life.
