Thoughts on Inauguration Day
Only two moments of absolute historical significance have occurred in my lifetime for which I have a memory. The last time, I was glued to television news on September 11, 2001. At 15 years old, I sat in my American History class watching people jump from the upper floors of the burning, crumbling buildings. Now I am sitting with my 6-month-old charge, watching Barack Obama being sworn in as the first African-American president in U.S. history. So many people pity the children born after September 11, saying they will never know the feeling of safety we enjoyed before then. But I say they are blessed, living in a world where it is truly possible for all Americans to achieve their dreams.
