Three artists you should meet

I am no artist.  Don't get me wrong:  I'm a photographer, and feel pretty comfortable with my ability to capture a pretty picture, but ask me to draw a face, and you'll wonder how I ever passed Kindergarten art class.  It's really quite stunning to me that I'm able to take pictures from all sorts of angles and perspectives, but ask me to draw a building from any sort of perspective other than straight on, I'm at a loss.

A week and a half ago, however, I went on a short retreat with several women to the Oregon coast -- and many of them were actually bona fide artists.  One of them, Kelly Rae Roberts, guided me through making my own canvas -- and I have to say, I love the result.  The piece now hangs in my studio with considerable pride.

As a result of my little artistic renaissance, I've found myself playing with canvases back at home; also, I've been scouring the internet, searching for new artists to follow and become inspired by.  Happily, I've found three (all members of Studio 1482, a collective of artists), so I thought I'd share them with you:

Despina Georgiadis -- I love the sketches by this talented artist; in particular, I love her sketches for various holidays from around the world.  It's been instantly added to my feed reader.

Margaret Hurst -- Not only do I love her sketches with its judicious use of colour, I'm intrigued by her new book, Frog Sex.  I may have to purchase this book (authored, edited and illustrated by Margaret) just to see what the hubbub is all about.

Michele Bedigian -- Another talented artist, who uses vibrant colour to enhance her line sketches.

Enjoy!

There are plenty of people who can make a decent likeness or at least make a face look like a face, and they still don't qualify as an artist.

I think that being an artist is not in what you do but how you do it!

I'm an artist. I have a degree that says so to prove it. And from my lofty position as a person who holds an art degree, I'm hear to tell you that being able to draw a face or capture perspective isn't actually a signifier of "artist". It denotes some skill, that's for sure, but there's no reason a person who's able to capture a moment with a camera, a perfect portrait, the light on the side of a fence, whatever, with a camera, can't be an artist too. Ansel Adams. Edward Weston. Cindy Sherman. Dorthea Lange. I'm thinking they might not have even been interested in drawing.

I always sucked at realism. but I don't think it's the arbiter of art. Nor do I think the medium is the determining factor. It's the eye of the artist.

Harumph. Also, Karen, I've seen your photos and I'd take exception to your not calling yourself an artist.
