Three little letters...
L. P. N. Who knew that having three letters behind your name could make you feel so good? I have actually accomplished part of what I set out to do a year and a half ago. Now I can officially say that I am a nurse. It certainly wasn’t easy though.
Taking the state boards was the hardest and most intimidating thing I’ve encountered so far in nursing. It took me two hours to complete the exam and I left the testing center completely exhausted. I had no idea how I did. What I did know is that I was dreading the 48 hours I’d have to wait to see if I passed or not.
Forty-eight hours later I was on the website and…nothing. To preoccupy myself and avoid sitting and hitting the refresh button over and over, I went outside and played in my garden. It seemed like I was out there forever. Too bad forever was actually just 15 minutes. Forty-eight hours and fifteen minutes later and…nothing.
Now I was starting to get mad. How dare they force me to pay hundreds of dollars to take a ridiculously difficult exam and now they’re late with my results? I don’t think so.
I called my friend Reba McEntire* because she had taken the exam two weeks before me. Her response to my temper tantrum was, “I told you the hardest part would be waiting the 48 hours. Sorry dude.” Then I called up my friend Janis Joplin* who had taken the exam the week before. Her response was, “Yep. Sucks doesn’t it?”
Since I wasn’t getting the response I was looking for I decided to check the website again. At this point it had been forty-nine hours. When I was once again disappointed I called Britney Spears*. She had also taken the exam the week before and was one of my more sympathetic friends. “I know, I know! It’s awful isn’t it? I’m so sorry…but you know you passed. I know you did. Don’t worry, you’ll find out soon.”
For some reason her words of encouragement didn’t put me at ease either. I knew it was time to call Lauryn Hill*, my friend from New Jersey who is great at keeping it real and putting me in my place. Ten seconds into my rant she cut me off and said, “Shut your mouth and listen to me. I know you’re stressed. In fact, your stress is stressing me out. So here’s what you’re going to do. Hang up the phone. Sit down in front of the computer and go to the website. Check your results. Call your parents and tell them that you passed. Then call me back.”
I have no idea how she knew my results would be ready when she hung up on me. I sat down in front of the computer and it said my results were ready to be viewed. My fingers were dialing my parent’s phone number before the results popped up. My dad answered and I blurted out, “I PASSED!” As tears of joy started streaming down my face my mom picked up the phone.
After all was said and done, I forgot to call Lauryn Hill back. She forgave me though. Three little letters...and now, I am a NURSE.
