Editor's Update: Today Woods issued a public statement reading in part, "I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."
Do you think his accident and alleged affair counts as news? Should we be discussing it, when healthcare and Afghanistan are on the table? (And by the way, have you seen #whymencheat and #whywomencheat on Twitter lately?) Join the open thread in the comments below.
Trying to make heads or tails of this Tiger Woods drama is like putting together one of those jigsaw puzzles where there are 2000 pieces and every single piece is the same color.
I've been ruminating about this post for five days and I still don't have all of the facts.
First the news was that Tiger Woods was in a serious car accident.
Then the news was that Tiger Woods just hit a tree and a fire hydrant outside of his house at 2:30 in the morning - but no alcohol was involved.
THEN the news was that Elin Woods bashed out his rear windshield because she was angry that he was having an affair.
Then the news was that Tiger was on pain pills and that his wife only smashed the windshield to drag him unconscious from the vehicle.
Now we know that the neighbors, who called 911 after the accident have contacted an attorney and Tiger Woods isn't even going to show up to his own golf tournament even though he only has some cuts on his face, and also that the Florida Highway Patrol might be looking into the case to see if alcohol was involved or if there is evidence of domestic violence.
My head hurts.
My neighbor, Lesley, called me this morning. She said "What is going on with Tiger Woods? I figured if anyone would know it would be you."
I went through the whole diatribe that you just read and said "I wish I knew, I have to write about him today. My best guess is that he cheated on his wife and they got in a big fight and she chased him out of the house with a gold club and he crashed his car trying to escape her wrath."
Then Lesley said "Why doesn't he just come out and say what happened. He is just a regular person."
But no. I told her that Tiger Woods isn't just a regular person. He is a role model. He is a super star. He is a spokesperson.
There is nothing regular about Tiger Woods. He is superman, right?

But either way, at this point couldn't it only benefit Tiger to come clean? With all of the speculation and rumors about the mistress and the "Kobe Special" (an allusion to the $4 million 8 carat purple diamond ring Kobe Bryant bought for his wife when he faced rape charges in 2003) it seems that no matter what his story is he could at least stop the rumors that are untrue.
Tiger Woods has a pretty clean record and his fans are a pretty forgiving bunch even if the media isn't. I think it is time for a press conference or at least some sort of statement. I am sure it is embarrassing, I am sure it will be painful, but at least that way we can get the story straight.
