The Tiger Woods Saga Continues

Editor's Update: Today Woods issued a public statement reading in part, "I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."

Do you think his accident and alleged affair counts as news? Should we be discussing it, when healthcare and Afghanistan are on the table? (And by the way, have you seen #whymencheat and #whywomencheat on Twitter lately?) Join the open thread in the comments below.

Trying to make heads or tails of this Tiger Woods drama is like putting together one of those jigsaw puzzles where there are 2000 pieces and every single piece is the same color.

I've been ruminating about this post for five days and I still don't have all of the facts.

First the news was that Tiger Woods was in a serious car accident.

Then the news was that Tiger Woods just hit a tree and a fire hydrant outside of his house at 2:30 in the morning - but no alcohol was involved.

THEN the news was that Elin Woods bashed out his rear windshield because she was angry that he was having an affair.

Then the news was that Tiger was on pain pills and that his wife only smashed the windshield to drag him unconscious from the vehicle.

Now we know that the neighbors, who called 911 after the accident have contacted an attorney and Tiger Woods isn't even going to show up to his own golf tournament even though he only has some cuts on his face, and also that the Florida Highway Patrol might be looking into the case to see if alcohol was involved or if there is evidence of domestic violence.

My head hurts.

2009 Australian Masters - Day 1

My neighbor, Lesley, called me this morning. She said "What is going on with Tiger Woods? I figured if anyone would know it would be you."

I went through the whole diatribe that you just read and said "I wish I knew, I have to write about him today. My best guess is that he cheated on his wife and they got in a big fight and she chased him out of the house with a gold club and he crashed his car trying to escape her wrath."

Then Lesley said "Why doesn't he just come out and say what happened. He is just a regular person."

But no. I told her that Tiger Woods isn't just a regular person. He is a role model. He is a super star. He is a spokesperson.

There is nothing regular about Tiger Woods. He is superman, right?

But either way, at this point couldn't it only benefit Tiger to come clean? With all of the speculation and rumors about the mistress and the "Kobe Special" (an allusion to the $4 million 8 carat purple diamond ring Kobe Bryant bought for his wife when he faced rape charges in 2003) it seems that no matter what his story is he could at least stop the rumors that are untrue.

Tiger Woods has a pretty clean record and his fans are a pretty forgiving bunch even if the media isn't. I think it is time for a press conference or at least some sort of statement. I am sure it is embarrassing, I am sure it will be painful, but at least that way we can get the story straight.

Really sad that so often thsi debate goes right into race. Atleast tiger woods has apologized ( http://www.zadanews.com/2009/12/12/tiger-woods-inf... ) , noone is perfect after all.

It doesn't matter at all to me for a couple reasons...

I am not a black man, nor am I a black woman trying to raise kids with a limited number of positive contemporary black male role models. I am not related to Tiger Woods, nor am I a racist golf fan just waiting for Tiger to fail.

My marriage is a "mixed race" marriage, so I guess in the larger scheme of things like public response, I could be a little interested in America's reaction to this story, if I weren't too caught up in their reaction to the mixed race coupling in The Princess and The Frog lol

At any rate, do you remember the world's obsession with Tiger Woods' wedding and honeymoon? People just eat up anything to do with Tiger Woods, good bad or indifferent.

haha I agree with you on everything you said except the burning part, haha this stuff is FUN! :D  We should almost thank him for the entertainment value! :D

It's unfortunate that you had that happen to you.  I knew a gal in the exact same situation.  She told me that she thought her boyfriend was checking her work voicemail.  I told her to change her password and he called her WITHIN. THE. HOUR. complaining about "Why did you change your password?"! :/

As far as the "meaning" of the clip, assuming that actually IS Tiger Woods in the clip, which it sounds like him AND the guy says "This is Tiger" haha, the most telling aspect to me is how his voice is cracking.  He's obviously very concerned and under duress that his wife went through his phone and is going to be calling that particular woman's number.  If things were on the up and up, he should have had an "Oh brother.. This nosey chick is at her shenanigans again" tone instead of one where he sounded scared of something.

Second, like you mention, you know he has "his ass in a sling" when he's telling a woman that's not his wife "I need you to do me a huge favor".  She has NO obligation to do ANYTHING for him whatsoever.  The fact that he's trying to hide her name doesn't bode well haha.  On top of that, there are too many websites where you can reverse-lookup phone numbers and get names, so he really played himself for no reason since his wife clearly already had this gal's number.

As far as my card being revoked, haha :) When I was in college, I had my phone numbers in my watch.  Not only did my watch remain LOCKED, but it also had a feature where some numbers were completely HIDDEN until I typed in a specific access code.  I found this double-blind useful when a gal would become suspicious that I wouldn't let her see who was on my phone.  If I felt like this was the only thing stopping me from getting on, I would key in the code (obviously without her seeing the code!) and let her stumble through my list because I knew that all the important numbers were invisible anyway.  Short of that, she would receive some version of "mind your own business". :)

My point wasn't that this tape doesn't sound BAD, but rather that he doesn't actually admit to having messed with this gal.  His nervousness, requests and the obvious importance he places on this gal's name not becoming available to his wife looks, walks and sounds like a duck. ;)

... and had an ex who would search her email and probably her phone too (because he was calling his girlfriend on his cell phone and wooing her online), I can agree, it may mean nothing, but uh, I at least thought Tiger was smart. He should have known better. Like I just said at my blog ( http://bigsole.blogspot.com/2009/12/tiger-tiger-bu... ), in this day and age he says that over a cell phone or any phone for that matter!

But listen to how proprietary he is telling the "waitress" or whatever to take her name off her own phone.  If she's nobody, then why must she go under the radar as the "unidentified caller" as if that will stop a wife from smelling a rat? Hmm.

Bill, if you're out chasing women and trying to hide it from your other girlfriend, I hope you do a better job than Tiger. ;-) Otherwise, your professional womanizer card will be revoked.

And it's very different to be a single womanizer versus a married womanizer.

Yep, them ducks is so easy to spot.  You should read the wild Twitter conversation ( http://bigsole.blogspot.com/2009/12/tiger-tiger-bu... ) I quoted in my post.

Nevertheless, I feel unclean discussing such unsavory matters. I think if we keep talking about poor Tiger, we're going to burn in hell.

Sorry, Nordette :D .. Unless there are actually incriminating audio clips, I can tell you as a professional womanizer that this tape means nothing at all.

If I had a girlfriend, there are LOTS of chicks that I text on a regular basis that I'm not messing with that I might have left this exact same message for if I were so stupid as to leave my cell phone unlocked around a nosey girlfriend/wife.

The reason for a message like this (which, granted, he should never have left, but he was clearly under duress! HAHAHA) is that her name is NOT in Tiger's phone, but there are probably lots of calls TO and FROM that number.  At the time, he was worried that his wife was going to be able to put a name to the number which opens him up to the side chick being Googled and then all Hell breaks loose! :D

Depending on how nosey/controlling his wife is, he may have just wanted to save BOTH OF THEM the hassle of her questioning both of them about their relationship to each other.  The wife would feel that way whether the chick was a golf buddy, drinking partner, masseuse, confidante OR side girlfriend, so this clip itself is absolutely meaningless being that he didn't admit to ever messing with her in his message.

Having said that... :D  It was REALLY STUPID of him to leave a message like this.  He should have called her over and over until he got her in person and then told her OR he should have texted her to call him back ASAP. haha You're probably right.. If it walks like a duck... :D

Poor, Tiger. He may be the world's greatest golfer, but when it comes to women, he's as dumb as any other married man who cheats.

I'm in the camp of "I don't care".

It's none of my business. It shouldn't be in the news. They should be left alone to sort out their own problems, which is not a veiled reference to anything I might suspect - everyone's got problems.

I do not understand the need to put celebrity lives under a microscope. None of it is any of my business. None.

Seriously? Has it come to this? Isn't there worst things to consider as breaking news?

Celebrities are held to such a high standard, but they do not deserve all the attention all the time. This story is one of those examples. We need to stop putting them on a pedestal.

As for being a role model, I pray that children look to someone who is closer to them than celebrities. These stars are only human, no one is perfect, but at least parents, teachers, and everyday people can realize how much their actions affect the kids...

least ye be judged. How do you know the rumors are true. People are salivating at the thought that this highly paid athlete with a sqeaky clean image is not really perfect after all. People seem to want it to be so. Why?? A minor traffic accident that injured no one (not even the driver), no alcohol or drugs. A traffic ticket. The rest of the story- it's none of our business. None of it. Get over yourselves.

Seriously. I couldn't care less why he was in the car. I couldn't care less if he had a fight with his wife. Could not care less. Things like this bring out the worst in western civilization: Our endless need to stick our noses in other people's business.  Leave them alone. Non-story.

that as it turns out...he's a man who can't keep it in his pants with a wife and two small kids at home. And I'd beat him with a golf club too.

I don't even know why this is "news." It makes me sick to see these stupid faux-news stories about celebrities and their little foibles dominate news broadcasts and publications.

Bill Cammack 5 pts

Exactly.  There's nothing to look into.  If alcohol were involved, the cops would have had to give Tiger a breathalyzer test on the scene.  If they didn't, that's over with.  If they did and he passed it, that's over with.

There's no Domestic Violence to look into because Tiger's not going to snitch on his wife IF in fact she did something to him.

I don't know why people think somebody has to say something when they crash their own car. :D .. Happens to people every day. \o/

Hi Sarah,

You know I love ya' but I gotta disagree.  As long as the police say there was no alcohol involved and there was no other car involved, I don't think Tiger has to come out and say a word.

He had an accident.  All the rest is speculation.  Even if the affair and the fight and all of that is true, he doesn't have to say a word about it.   If charges aren't being pressed, it's no longer a public matter.  No matter what problems he and his wife may be having, they have kids to protect and anything they come out and say will only come back to haunt them.

If there's eventually a divorce or something like that, it'll all come out anyway, but right now the only real fact is he had an accident and was injured.
