Tips, tricks and tools to help ease laptop related aches and pains

Considering just how much time I spend sitting at my desk banging on my keyboard or clicking my trackball, I'm surprisingly ache free. I've had the occasional wrist ache and I have this weird shoulder and back problem happening (more on that in a minute) but nothing "chronic". I'm thankful for that and always on the lookout for tips and tricks that might help keep the chronic desk jockey related pain away.

The brilliant and crafty Deb Roby recently told me about Harbinger Leather Wrist Wraps, intended to help support the wrists of weight lifters. Deb is an amazing weight lifter but she shared these because they might help relieve the wrist pain felt by those who spend a significant amount of time at their computers. That would be me... and probably you.

I thought this was a brilliant idea. I've tried to use a couple of different types of wrist braces during bouts of wrist pain and none of them really worked for me. They were either too stiff or not stiff enough. These wraps for weight lifters seem to be a good combination, neither too stiff or to flimsy.

A few days after Deb shared this tip, I went to the BlogHer office and found Liz Henry wearing these wrist wraps! I probably won't use them as a preventative because I don't like anything on my hands. It would drive me crazy to wear them. How about you? If you've tried another type of wrist brace or wrap, share - and tell us whether it helped or didn't.

My old friend skeeter just bought her first laptop and is struggling to get used to the keyboard. I recommend a laptop stand that angles the keyboard just a little. Any time I travel and don't have mine, my wrists start to ache just a bit. I also use a trackball which hurts my hands less than a mouse (I really hate laptop touchpads - which is odd since I used a plug in SmartCat touchpad with my desktop for years and years.) How did you adjust to using a laptop after years of desktop use? Did your wrists and hands ache at first? Do you have any everyday laptop use tips to share?

While you're giving tips, I'd like to hear which computer chair YOU love and why you love it.

When we moved to Illinois, we left my very old computer chair behind. I'm still sitting in a dining room chair and it is beginning to take its toll. I'm having some back and shoulder pain. Every time we go to a store that sells chairs, I sit in them but nothing feels "right". Help, please. I need a great chair, ASAP.

I can tell you what kind of chair I do NOT want - I don't want a balance ball chair no matter how good they are for you. No thanks!

I await your tips and tricks, chair recommendations, and your own stories of laptop related aches and pains.

Ienjoyed your writing on this topic - an important one that we don't often think about, but one which sent me to the chiropractor, the massage therapist and a physical therapist. I get chronic neck, shoulder, back, wrist pain if I don't pay attention.

If you don't mind me saying, I wrote a piece on computer stresses ( http://demystifyingdigital.com/article.asp?type=way&aID=386&wID=3 ) a while back that might have some helpful tips for those of you who spend as much time computing as I do. (You're welcome to read it if you'd like - I have no axe to grind and I don't ever sell anything. I just write.)

Having read the blogs on laptop stands I have been using a stand for a year now, which I am thrilled with. I work at least eight hours a day on my laptop and often travel with it.

I do not suffer from any kind of physical stress and think that my laptop stand has something to do with this.

I suggest folk who are interested visit ww.ergo-tilt.com

I have dequerveins and carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands, as well as tennis elbow. They are all repetitive motion injuries, the result of a few decades in pest control work in the days before most of us had ever heard of ergonomics. I reacted promptly to the first twinges of pain when I started using the laptop. Interestingly, what's working for me is the positioning of my laptop so that the back is lower than the front - it allows me to flex my wrists into a very relaxed and natural position while typing. My wireless mouse allows more comfortable positioning than I have with the touchpad. I'm also taking more frequent breaks and moving around more.

Re the earlier comment about head and neck pain: I saw a recent report about surfers with debilitating neck injuries, including paralysis, related not to crashes and head bumps, but to holding the head up and back while on their stomachs and paddling. Those who spend a lot of time at their computers are at risk for the same injury if the positioning of their monitors is causing neck strain. Whether we're surfing the waves or the web, if it hurts - STOP THAT and find a better way.

Which IKEA chair do you have and why do you like it?

This is the laptop stand ( http://www.amazon.com/Targus-PA241U-Podium-Coolpad/dp/B00006LHPG ) I finally settled on, after trying a couple of different kinds. I've had it for years and I love it.

I'm definitely thinking about getting some kind of support for my laptop.  I've seen a couple online that looked interesting, but not sure what will really do the trick.

Hope you find a good chair soon, I think that anything will be an improvement over a dining room chair!! I got mine at Ikea.

Did you make this foam pad yourself or did you buy it for that purpose? Does it help with heat sink problems? More details, please.

... for every 30 minutes and then "do something" for 3 minutes (yes, it's timed too). This both helps me from getting into "complete time sucks" online and keeps my body moving. If I don't, the next time I get up, I'll be stiff and bent over.

I keep my laptop not on a stand but on a foam pad that tips the keyboard downward.

My best tip: every hour or so, GET UP from that chair and do something else for a few minutes. Go get a glass of water, fold laundry (if you work from home), go to the bathroom, whatever. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you get up, stretch and do something non-computer-related for a few minutes.

A couple years ago I had problems with the back of my head getting numb - turned out it was from always having my head bent down a bit looking at my laptop.  What made it go away was using either an external monitor or putting my laptop on a stand so that when I looked it I was always looking straight ahead.

I can rant about smoking for as long as you can rant about patriarchy.

Yep, good excuse for a smoke break. I know, I'm crazy, you can say it. ;-)

Now that's interesting. I never would have thought of that. Another good reason for a laptop stand!
