For the last three years, October 16 has been declared World Bread Day by the International Union of Bakers and Bakers-Confectioners. According to the official site, this occasion marks the symbolic importance of bread and "wants to provide an opportunity to talk about bread and bakers, to find out about their history, their importance as well as their future." Each year, many food bloggers make bread in honor of the World Bread Day blogging event, organized by Zorra from Kochtopf.

From her home in Anadalusia, Spain, Zorra spreads news of the event to bloggers all over the world and collects links for a huge round-up of bread recipes, posted about a week after the official day. You still have one more day to send an entry for this year's celebration. Meanwhile, if you'd like to have your own celebration in honor of bread, here are some recipes I've spotted that look good.

Nutella-Pistachio Brioche

Susan from Sticky Gooey Creamy Chewy made Nutella-Pistachio Brioche that looks outstanding (pictured above.) She used the brioche recipe from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, the book written with Jeff Hertzberg by food blogger and master baker Zoe from Zoe Bakes. If you're interested in baking, Zoe's blog is one to add to your feed reader.

Syrian Onion Bread

The savory Syrian Onion Bread pictured above was made by Gemma from Pro Bono Baker, using a recipe from Bread by Christine Ingram. Gemma says the topping of onion, cumin, coriander, and mint really works in this recipe.

Honey Whole Wheat Bread

Anh from Food Lover's Journey in Melbourne uses a basic recipe for Honey Whole Wheat Bread from Martha Stewart to make her bread for World Bread Day. When she takes out her beautiful bread (pictured above) Anh considers how she'd like to bake bread every day if she had the time.

World Bread Day 2006 had 113 bloggers participating, and World Bread Day 2007 inspired 184 bloggers to post about the bread they made. I'm guessing even more bloggers will participate this year, and when Zorra posts the round-up, I'll edit this post so BlogHer readers can find all the recipes from World Bread Day 2008.

(Edit: There were 245 entries this year! You can find a lifetime of bread recipes at the World Bread Day Round-Up.)

Do you like baking your own bread, and if so, what's your favorite recipe for bread?

Kalyn Denny writes about food and at BlogHer.com and shares her passion for cooking at Kalyn's Kitchen. Although Kalyn confesses to being slightly baking-impaired, earlier this year she made a pretty good-looking 100% Whole Wheat and Bran Bread, using the method from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day

I think it's now firmly established as a tradition. I'm guessing Zorra will see this and notify you next year too!

I can't believe I missed World Bread Day. I now have it on my calendar for next year. I'm so pleased that the bread from our book was represented by Susan on this fabulous occasion!

Thank you for the wonderful post and making this great day known to more and more bakers, like me!!!

Glad you enjoyed the panel discussion. I'm not sure how well we stayed on topic, but we did talk about some useful information I hope.

I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I made my very first loaf of bread from scratch without my bread machine today, and it turned out SO wonderful!  I used Lori's quick rolls recipe ( http://mywoodenspoon.com/2008/10/08/loris-quick-ro... )but instead of making rolls, I just balled it up into a sprayed loaf pan and baked it.  It came out so wonderful, I can't wait to go buy more flour so I can make more!  Slightly sweet, slightly doughy - perfect!

Btw - Kalyn, I attended your session on how us food bloggers can save social media and I enjoyed hearing you & the rest of the panel's take on things!  I can't wait to further explore your site, and the links that were mentioned during the panel.  Thanks for doing it!

BlogHer and the visit with Lydia were both a lot of fun. Lydia has an amazing house and I got to try a lot of new (to me) foods!

but your blog won't let me leave a comment. Awesome looking bread. Tanna, you're a master baker, no doubt about it.

Your visit sounded like great fun. And you got to BlogHer, that had to be cool.

The buns were the star over the loaf but it's was good bread.  Eva at Sweet Sins did a very similar one that I now have started on my counter.

Since I've been off visiting Lydia I'm seriously behind on my blog reading, but Tanna, I bet you made some type of awesome bread, right?

More is better in the case of world bread day!  and I'm looking for lots more like these.

And do check back for the link to the entire list of recipes because there are bound to be lots of good ones.

I have a bread machine too, and sometimes I even make bread in it with a mix from Bob's Red Mill, which is still better than buying bread with NFCS!

I bake when I have time on the weekends, like *real* baking, but for weeknights I rely on my bread machine. It's nicer than paying four bucks a loaf for whole wheat bread without HFCS that spoils in a few days.

I'm stealing these recipes for when I have those leisurely weekends!

I'm a bit scared of yeast myself.

You can find all the information at the link in the post.

I've been working up to baking my own bread lately (i'm a bit scared of yeast).  But I didn't know this was happening!  I'll have to post about my experiments tonight : )

I think I have a recipe for that... ( http://krissyscookingblog.blogspot.com/ )
