Today's Apple iPad Mini Announcement

BlogHer Original Post

Today's Apple Announcements were in a smaller venue – a theater in San Jose – and were live-streamed on Apple TV and the Apple website. Apple hasn't live-streamed an event in quite some time. But the news that Apple indeed will be taking orders on the iPad Mini starting on Friday was as big as ever.

The iPad Mini will start at $329. It comes in both black and white. It will be 7.9 inches in size and weigh .68lbs. As you can see in the image, it's a good size for a firm, one-handed grip. That base price of $329 gets you LTE (4G wireless) and 802.11n Wi-Fi, 16GB capacity, a dual core chip, FaceTime in high def and a 5 megapixel camera on the back. The battery is supposed to be good for 10 hours. For cellular in the 16GB model, the price is $459. The display is NOT a retina display.

With all that, Apple promises you get the "full iPad experience."

With upgrades, the price can go as high as $659. With the Kindle Fire HD, Windows Surface and Nexus 7 all coming in at under $300, it's pretty clear that the iPad Mini is not trying to compete in the smaller tablet market on price range. For 32GB it will be $429 for wifi only or $559 for cellular. The 64GB model is $529 for wifi only or $659 for cellular.

Apple also announced a redesigned desktop iMac. The new design includes a brilliant display, reduced reflection, and faster speeds. According to iClarified,

The new iMac features third generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processors that can be upgraded to Core i7. The latest NVIDIA GeForce processors deliver up to 60 percent faster performance for advanced gaming and graphics intensive apps. Every new iMac now comes standard with 8GB of 1600 MHz memory and a 1TB hard drive, and customers can choose to configure their iMac with up to 32GB of memory and a new 3TB hard drive, or 768GB of flash storage for ultimate performance. With two Thunderbolt and four USB 3.0 ports, the new iMac delivers even greater expandability and support for high-performance peripherals.

The basic model iMac is $1299.

You can watch Apple's iPad Mini video on the Apple site. This video gives you all the iPad Mini high points in under 5 minutes. At some point today, Apple is schedule to post the entire event video as well.
