Toilet Talk: Part Deux

I'm feeling so grateful this week, and dialed into a peaceful, roll-with-it self. It's as though my head was popped off and drained of baggage that's been weighing me down for too long - martyrdom, negative self-talk, and perfectionism.

In the fashion of slowing down and savoring my gratitude, this post is a shout out in thanks.

Let's start with poop. She did it! My youngest went #2 in the toilet.

She potty trained two years ago, but had no interest in a download on the toilet and preferred under tables instead.

But last week, she dropped one in.

The first time, her sister was in the bathroom with her, so we half wondered if there was a switcheroo. You know, big sister going for her and then calling out to mom and dad for the celebration.

The look on her older sister's face was pure excitement, though, letting us know it was legit.

Then next morning, S and I were preparing for school in her room when she said, "Mommy, I need to go poop. I need a ..."

She took off down the hallway and called out minutes later, "Mommy, I did it."

So, what did the trick?

Well, first off, time. She did it on her terms, when she was ready.

Second: The princess underwear inspired her. A couple weeks ago at Target, S wanted to roam the baby aisles. As we passed the little girl underwear, she stopped to admire the Ariel, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty undies.

Seizing the moment, I said, "What if I get you these underwear, and every time you go poopy in the toilet, you get a pair?"

Her eyes widened, "Okay, mommy."

Stephen, my husband, smartly placed the 7-pack on the ledge behind the loo.

She looked at it for a few days, making comments, considering, and then ... she did it, and there's been no turning back.

Secondly, I am grateful for my husband's thoughtfulness. He bought me the best gift for Mother's Day. I've been struggling with weeknight dinners. My inner ticker tape at dinnertime was negative, negative, and repeat.

My husband is intuitive, and understands how to read me, help me. We love the William Sonoma cookbooks - they've been full proof for us - so I was geeked he bought me a binder by William Sonoma called The Weeknight Cook. 

Following my new plan, I cooked an extra meal on Sunday - tortilla soup from The Weeknight Cook. But instead of the called-for chili power, I added cayenne pepper - certain it was close enough. The recipe called for 2 tsp of chili power. Knowing cayenne was hotter, I added about 1/2 tsp of it.

One taste of the soup, and I knew it was destined for my lunch box and not the dinner table. Holy Heavens! I'd wondered why my husband and I were sneezing so much in the kitchen. Now I knew the answer.

But even with that snafu, I'm grateful for my quirks. Accepting them opens me to humor and grace. If you can't laugh at yourself ... you can't really let go and dive in.

And like I said at first, I'm done with martyrdom, negative self-talk, and perfectionism. Those demons only fill me with fear, anxiety.
