It's late and I can't sleep. I was thinking about a story a friend of mine told about her Amazon Parrot, Tojo, and a litter of Chihuahua puppies. I've never owned a parrot or even been around one until Tojo, so I was surprised to find out how smart this one is.

Tojo loves puppies. He's never kept "in" his bird cage. He likes to perch on top of the cage and go in and out as he pleases. He talks to the dogs and enjoys telling on them when they get into things. This particular day, he was apparently bored with their activity and decided to create some excitement of his own. He hid under an end table by the couch and waited as the puppies played and tumbled across the floor with each other. When they "tumbled" his way, he ran out from under the end table squawking and screaming. The poor puppies yelped and fell all over each other trying to get away. Tojo threw his head back and LAUGHED like a human for a good 5 minutes!! He's good at this sort of thing.

When my friend had a pug puppy, Tojo would coax her to his bird cage DAILY, telling her she was pretty and cuddly. He used such a sweet voice and made her believe he really wanted to give her affection. The poor little dog would finally walk to the cage expecting love and tenderness, but Tojo would scream "GET OUT OF HERE, NOW!!". She would yelp and run. I can't imagine! Since this happened DAILY, my friend had no choice but to find someone to take the puppy.

I usually talk to my friend at least twice a week. I often hear Tojo in the background yelling at the dogs to "Stop it" or yelling my friend's name. I thought birds only mimicked sound. I assure you, this one has learned the language.
