For a living I work as a style consultant. The goal is to
help women find their personal style. Real personal style. You know, what fits
them not some fad. One of the largest hurdles I have to jump is getting women
to recognize that they are worthy of being beautiful even if their body is not “perfect”.
I hate hearing this from women and it often makes me want to shake them and
scream in their face that there is no such thing as perfect. But I digress.
I hate this notion that a woman must put her life on hold
until she believes she is aesthetically pleasing to the world. I see women live
paralyzed lives because they are so frustrated and feel trapped in their own
bodies. They don’t see the point in building themselves up or dressing
themselves beautifully because they believe the package is undeserving.
This has got to stop.
I know more than anyone that body image is tied up to self
image. I know what it feels like to feel that your body is so huge that it’s pointless
to try to pull it all together. But the fact remains that when effort is put
into the physical appearance that something magical can happen. A woman’s “flaws”
can all of a sudden become assets. All of those things you don’t like about
yourself can disappear while highlighting all of the things that you absolutely
love. This is why I think it is so important for women to learn how to dress
their body and to not be afraid of looking good. I have seen so many women
develop this self-defeatist behavior and believe that there is no garment on
the planet that can make them look amazing. I beg to differ. I have placed many
garments on women’s bodies that were met with an eye-roll, a sigh and a shrieked
“I can’t wear that!”
There is a fear in stepping outside of a comfort zone and
honestly this is what most people need to do in order to find the right things.
I encourage people to step into stores they never shop in and try on things
they think that they could never pull off. You never know what’s going to look
great but, it’s important to try. You may think that something will look
terrible on you but until you actually put it on you will never know. You could
be bypassing racks and racks of clothes that are perfect for you.
I also tell my clients to get over sizes. Every store has a
different sizing chart and you could be a 2 in one store and 16 in another
store. Yes, it can be that radically different. It doesn’t mean that you have
all of a sudden changed it’s the charts that change not the person. Most women
have clothes in their closet that are 4 different sizes. I have clothes that go
from a size 4 to a size 12. This isn’t a matter of “skinny” clothes and “fat”
clothes, on a daily basis I wear clothes that run the gamut of these sizes. It’s
about fit NOT size. If the number bothers you so much simply cut the tag out
and move on with your life. There are much more pressing issues in this world
and in your life then what size pants or dress you wear. Embrace who you are
and fit your body properly. This will allow you to feel that you look great
everyday and allow your mind to focus on those aforementioned other important
issues.
When you start to embrace your body instead of berating it
all things change. Yes, maybe you want to be 10, 20, 30 whatever pounds thinner
but why put off your life until that goal is achieved? I always say tomorrow is
today, so stop waiting. You should never put off loving yourself or celebrating
who you are due to some arbitrary number.
