Tonight Is The Beginning Of A Grand Adventure

I finally did something I've promised myself I'd do for a few years now. I've been biding my time, waiting for David to get to a point developmentally where I think he can take this on. That, combined with an awesome sale on an electronic keyboard and stand set at Costco, plus a local woman advertising on Facebook for new students has led to tonight:

David's first piano lesson.

I don't for one moment think this will be easy.

In fact, there's a very good chance it's going to be frustrating and David will hate hate hate practicing. His father is skeptical that David will want to do it at all, and with just cause. But I have a gut feeling about this, and on this autism journey with this incredible little boy, I've learned that trusting my gut can be invaluable.

David has been highly musical from birth. He sang before he talked. He signs all the time! He'd rather watch a movie with music anytime, and after one or two viewings, he can sing the soundtrack from any movie - including the background music! He does an awesome version of "I Won't Say I'm In Love" from Hercules, and will set your heart to sighing with his soulful rendition of "When Christmas Comes To Town" from Polar Express. He loves toys that make music, and when he hears birdsong, he'll sing back to them - get this - matching their pitch.

What kind of kid does that? He's got such a musical ear on him, and I know, I just plain know this will be something he can fly with. Once he gets the basics down, anyway. It's just going to be a slow, grinding, frustrating, I'm-so-tempted-to-give-up process to get there. Not that we both haven't lived that scenario before a bazillion times with lots of other things, but to deliberately court it is either madness or brilliance.

I'm banking on madness that'll lead to brilliance. One key at a time.

Wish us luck!
