thanksgivingNo offense to Honeybeast who wants to ban pumpkin pie, candied yams, cranberry sauce, and turkey from Thanksgiving in favor of short bread and Peking duck, but some dishes and some experiences are a must at my Thanksgiving.

10. Rolls
Preferably white bread rolls. My mom made crescent rolls one year and it almost ruined the meal. We are not a family of change on Thanksgiving.

9. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
I’ve had to miss it the last few years because I was traveling, but I love to watch the parade. It’s so much fun to watch the balloons and cold New Yorker’s freezing their bums off while Texans (maybe) done a light sweater.

8. Relish Tray
It’s not something I see too much in Texas but it’s a Yankee holdover from my parents Michigan roots. Each year one lucky diner is charged with buying jars of pickles, olives, okra, and cheese, tomatoes and celery to much on as an appetizer.

7. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
My mom is in charge of this dish and we always have a massive pan of potatoes with Turkey gravy on the side. I’d revolt if they took my taters away. And I never want to volunteer to peel all those puppies.

6. Cranberry Sauce/Turkey
Homemade our out of the can, jellied or berried, the red sauce is so tasty and a perfect sweet tartness that compliments turkey. I love the big bird full of cornbread stuffing. I’m a white meat girl.

5. Casseroles
Potatoes au gratin, green bean, broccoli and cheese etc. If it’s in CorningWare and hot, it’s going on my paper plate!

4. Football
I never really watch the game, but it’s the one unifying thing that can calm family down. If you don’t know a soul or don’t have anyone you really want to talk to, the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions have saved more than one Thanksgiving for many families.

3. The Big Kids Table
For years I was the designated table setter and spent most of my time at the card table with the little kids. Now, finally, I’m an adult. I have a permanent spot at the big table, and I’m also responsible for cooking. I’m being groomed to be lead cook one day.

2. Desserts
My favorite is pumpkin pie, but this year I’m making a cheesecake for my brother and I’m using a strawberry pie recipe from my uncle. Thank you Libby’s for putting the recipes on the can!

1. Family
You may not be able to tolerate them for extended periods of time, heck you may not even like them, but when your mouth is full of food and you’re sharing a good meal or glass of wine, Thanksgiving makes family time tolerable.

It’s T-minus three days and if you haven’t gone to the grocery store yet, girl, get your butt in the car and elbow your way through the baking aisle. I went Saturday and the store was out of pumpkin pie spices! I couldn’t find
