Toronto's Trash Strike Is Over!

So a couple of weeks ago I posted about a local strike in Toronto, of which much of the focus was the growing piles of trash. Guess what? The strike's over. The garbage will disappear. The pools and summer camps and day cares will reopen. Life will go back to normal. Maybe?

Ok, so the strike is not 100% officially over yet. It's mostly over. It seems that all that is left to end the strike is a city council vote to end it. But will they? Probably. If not as it said in the Toronto Star, "All hell would break loose." Angry Egg said that it would be "political suicide" for the councillors if they didn't vote it through. She also reminds people to have a little patience.

So many of the services will likely not be up and running until next week at the earliest and realistically not until the following week but I am thinking happy thoughts.
I will continue to hang onto my garbage, recycling, green bin recycling and yard waste until I get the go ahead to leave it out for the refuse fairies. I have held onto some of this stuff over six weeks- what is a few more days?

Megan McPhee reminds us that just because the garbage won't be in a local park doesn't mean it's not by someone's house.

Much of our waste, which gets whisked away on our convenient bi-weekly schedules is dumped in areas that are near people. Yes, Friends of Christie Pits, REAL people just like you and me. Real people who have to put up with the stench of our garbage, who suffer the effects of contaminated land and water, who, like you and I, are the victims of sneaky bureaucratic decisions that obviously do not have the best interests of the people in mind. And so it is under these circumstances that I feel the need to deny the importance of getting all up in arms over temporary dumpsites in the City of Toronto when there are more pressing matters at hand.

Cheap Eats Toronto is celebrating with some wine suggestions.

For those of you outside of the (416), you remained smug in your clean environs – immune from the apoplectic stink that occasionally wafted past on the streets of TO. Fortunately for Torontonians the weather has been cool and often wet – hampering summer activities but helping the garbage strike stink. The “weather-tellers” predict a relatively dry and warm August – thank goodness – and once again Vintages rises to the occasion with great grilling wines to enhance your BBQ fare and general Epicurean enjoyment.

I think it's very kind of them celebrate with something that can be enjoyed across the country, don't you?

Whether you live in Toronto or not, has the strike changed how you think about your garbage? Are you more inclined to start composting? Have you redoubled your reduce, reuse and recycling efforts?

I got up this morning to news that city council might not ratify the deal. Wow!
