Trading Cable for a Clean House

Two weeks ago, I had a housecleaner come to our house for the first time ever. I was worried that she would say that it couldn’t be done. She said that she was going to have to bring a helper for the first cleaning. She said it would take a very, very long time. And even though it would mean cutting back on other things we valued in our budget, I agreed to it right away.

Our house is a disaster. And it’s not like when people apologize for their house and then you walk in and it’s perfect. My husband and I are both very messy. I would like to blame this on having small children. But, while the kids haven’t helped things, the truth is we’ve had a pretty messy house since we were first married. My husband has piles of clothes. I have piles of papers. We started calling them mountains a few years ago. Then we started joking that they were mountain ranges. It used to be sort of funny. But at some point, the balance tipped and it stopped being funny and started being stressful and unmanageable. We stopped laughing and started bickering over cleaning and chores.

So two weeks ago, I finally admitted that I needed help. I looked at our budget. We were spending almost $100 a month on basic cable. I thought we needed it, but decided that we needed a clean house more. We were also spending a small fortune on Starbucks. I love Starbucks, but can make coffee at home for a lot less money. I put both cable and Starbucks on the chopping block. So with the money saved from giving up cable and coffee, we had what we needed to pay for two cleanings a month.

When the housecleaner arrived and started cleaning, I felt extremely uncomfortable. It was like letting someone see your worst secrets, your hidden mess, your worst side of yourself. Because that’s exactly what it was. But I also felt relief. I needed this help. I just had to accept it.

When she left, I just felt bliss. Peace. Contentment. And for the past two weeks, I’ve been able to maintain the surface cleaning because I felt energized by the deep cleaning.

And I realized that it was OK to admit that I needed help with something. It seems so simple and obvious now. This has been the best investment that I’ve made in a long time. It’s like therapy. I’m happier and less stressed. My husband and I are getting along better. The children are better behaved.

It’s all very zen in here now. I may not have cable and coffee, but I have peace. And clean floors.

We traded in cable too a few months ago. We still spend a few dollars per month on Hulu Plus and Netflix, but it's a fraction of what we used to pay. The savings goes straight into the savings account!

Sounds like a great trade-off. We dropped cable a while back & haven't missed it!

Excellent! Ah...that must be some lovely peace of mind.

So glad this is working for you. We've had cleaners in the past and it was wonderful. The peace of mind can't be underestimated and is worth cutting back on a couple of budget items, I agree.

As women, we can kill ourselves over the "shoulds" related to house-cleaning. There's a shame factor, but getting past that and getting help around the house is liberating! Not to mention it can save relationships. :)

"Liberating" is exactly the right word. And you're totally right about the "shoulds" -- that was the hardest part to get past...Thanks! :)

I applaud your decision but I have one question. You do have Netflix monthly streaming, right? :) Gotta have some movies and TV! :)

Jane Collins

Yes! We do! That's a very important detail that I left out! :And it's only $7.99 a month! ;)

OK...This post is nothing short of group therapy...thank you for sharing your thoughts. I don't understand how you make sure people don't steal. We had a guy in to fix the roof, a family friend if you can believe it, and he took some family heirlooms...so now I'm a nut-job about people being in the house without me being handcuffed to them...or maybe it's called hovering....Thanks again, Fondly, Robin

I worried about that too -- the woman we hired is highly recommended by several of my friends and she has been working for them for a long time. But I totally understand...I think if you hire a cleaning service they do background screenings and have insurance, etc. Maybe just hide the heirlooms?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: i'll rip the braces off my kids teeth before I give up a cleaning service! Clean house is way way way cheaper than divorce attorney and/or the therapy my kids will need after I'm done pulling the weekly crazy mom routine.

Kathykate OMGoodness...funniest thing I've ever read....braces off the teeth...Fondly, Robin

Kathykate LOVE THIS! I often refer to my cleaning person as my couples therapist :)

I'm still in the "should be doing it myself" phase, which means it's not getting done. So I need some help: What did you do with the mountains? Clean them up before the cleaners? Leave them? I keep telling myself I'll call someone in AFTER I get the house decluttered, or in boxes, or filed. So I'm stuck.

That was EXACTLY my problem. I felt like I had to get it all cleaned and organized before I called anyone. But that never happened. But I finally broke down and called anyway. That's why it was so embarrassing. And, yes, the mountains are still there. She cleaned around them. But I have finally been able to make some progress on the decluttering because I have been less stressed about the rest of the house -- and more inspired. (and I can send you the name of the woman. she has already seen the worst of the worst...;)

No I don't like the way people clean my things, so I'd have to go right behind them and reclean. I don't have cable tv just get the local free stations. I read more books and I get my comp signal from an air card picking up local signal from the near ski centers, so I am way ahead and don't need anyone to clean up my mud when it's time to plant the gardens and I like my mponey in my pocket.

String of comments is too funny. If a cleaning service makes your life easier and happier, by all means go for it. Good for you for figuring out a tradeoff that works for your family. And don't worry...pretty confident that your kids will find a way to muddle through without cable ;)

Great comments! I am a cleaning lady and I love my clients! I love that they love when I come and the happiness I give them. Some are older and can't do it well anymore and others are just busy people and would rather spend the money and enjoy doing other things.

Hahahaha. I don't think I've EVER heard the argument that taking away TV from kids is a bad thing. Hilarious to see these opinions. I love TV so I'm keeping it. Almost everyone I know in my 'hood has a cleaning lady. I can't do it. I'm too Type A. I'd scrub the toilet before she came to scrub the toilet.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have both. But that's mostly because my family would never agree to get rid of the cable and I can't clean because of my fibromyalgia. If I had to make a choice, I would take the cleaning over the cable.

We don't have cable anyway, but i'd say no. I happen to love cleaning. And I'm way too OCD to trust anyone else to do it 'right'!! ;)

Oooo....that would be hard; I have some shows I *love*. When I worked full time I had help, and now that I'm a stay-at-home-mom I still I have someone come help me every other week. I stay home to raise my kids, not to clean (why does it suddenly become my job to clean because I'm the one who is home?). Besides, I still do *plenty* of cleaning with laundry, touch-ups between cleaning, and a constant flow of dishes. Cleaning day is one of my favorite days ;)
