Transitioning to spring: where to start, how far to go

A shopping website recently asked me to guest post on their blog about transitioning your wardrobe from Winter to Spring. What they neglected to tell me was that they wanted it to be no longer than 300 words. So I presented one that was nearly 3 times the length, and then had to cut it down until it was not much more than a glorified bullet list. I didn't want the original post to go to waste, so I'm sharing it here.

Spring officially begins in less than 3 weeks, and it starts to show.

Though some of us may still see snow when they look outside their window, many of us can at least see a few signs of the changing season: longer days, milder weather, not to mention the spring collections hitting the stores!

Personally, I have had quite enough of the cold and while I love my ankle boots, I dare say I have also had enough of my winter wardrobe. I’m ready to start transitioning to spring! If you are too, but don’t know where to start, keep reading.

Switch to lighter layers

Local weather permitting, start lightening up your clothing. For instance:

- choose a thin cardi and a top over a chunky knit;

- swap your faithful boots for a playful peep-toe version;

- get a few spring dresses out of storage and wear them with opaque stockings and boots, and if needed, a thin turtleneck underneath to add a warm layer. This will add a boho vibe to our outfit, and allow you to include a touch of spring wardrobe without sacrificing warmth.

Pick a few spring trends to mix up with your winter wardrobe

Add some clear accessories to your look, with a clear bangle or cuff, a lucite beaded necklace or a pump with a see-through heel (just stay away from stripper-like lucite high heel platform sandals ;-));

- swap your classic mini or pencil skirt for a full skirt, like the ones shown by Jason Wu, Hermés and Chanel. Full skirts have a slightly vintage, feminine vibe – but the ones we saw on the Spring runways feature a shorter hemline, which keeps them young and playful.

- Indulge in the lingerie trend by pairing a corset top with black pants and heels or topping a delicate lingerie-inspired dress with an unexpected piece like an edgy leather jacket or a trench coat.

Choose brighter colors and more prints (florals, graphic)

While neutral tones are actually really hot for spring, when I’m wishing for warmer weather and sunny days, bright colors definitely speak to me more than beige, taupe and off-white.

The color of Spring 2010 is apparently turquoise, a shade that I love, because it reminds me of summers spent on the island in the Mediterranean where I was born and grew up. Turquoise is bright, sunny, and it pairs well with most neutrals. So why not add a touch of turquoise to brighten up your winter outfits? Wear a turquoise top under your suit, or brighten up your outfit with a turquoise handbag or even turquoise or teal tights. Turquoise speaks of summer and fun, so why not start having fun by wearing it?

Or you can choose to indulge in a classic spring trend, florals. If you, like me, are not much for florals, how about adding just a touch? Or even better, a 3D floral: accessories featuring rosettes, sculpted flowers and the like – what better way to welcome spring?

And let’s not forget sailor stripes, which are already everywhere. Add a playful tone to your work wardrobe by adding a striped boat neck tee to simple navy pants, or choose something more fun like a flirty striped dress for going out – pair it with stockings and a jacket and make this spring trend work for you, too.

When it comes to fashion the line between the seasons is often blurry – don’t be afraid to experiment with trends from the upcoming season, even if no one else is. Isn’t experimenting integral part of the fun of fashion, anyway?
