Travel beauty: five things you cannot live without on the plane

This is a compensated review from BlogHer, Mario Badescu, and Benefit.

This year alone, I have taken somewhere in the region of forty flights. I've been to Vietnam and Berlin and London and Rome and the Bahamas, and I say all this not to make you jealous, but to make you understand that my skin? IT HAS BEEN A MESS. My hair? IT HAS BEEN A MESS. My makeup? IT HAS BEEN A MESS. Flying and beauty don't really go hand in hand, you see: the air in the cabin saps your skin of moisture, the lack of sleep on a redeye gives you the pallor a dead person, and the...well, I don't even know what it is, but there's something on the plane that makes your hair insanely staticky. Which is really not very attractive at all.

With the holidays right around the corner, my guess is that a lot of you are going to be traveling soon. And so I hereby present to you the five products I cannot live without when I am flying---and trust me, this has been a serious trial and error sort of experiment---in the hopes that you can pack something similar of your own the next time you get on a plane.

1. Wet Ones Pocket-Sized Hand & Face Wipes: Look, I know they're not glamorous, but they're awesome. I use mine to wipe my makeup off if I'm on a long flight and want to sleep for a few hours, to refresh me when I wake up again, and to take care of that weird stain that somehow materialized on my shirt after I tried to eat my sandwich during turbulence. They're also antibacterial, which makes them a reasonable alternative for "washing" your hands in a pinch---or for wiping down the armrest between you and your snotty-nosed neighbor. $2.99 at drugstores

2. Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream: On flights longer than an hour or two, I like to slather myself with moisturizer, otherwise my skin gets super dry while I'm in the air, and then it's Zit City (Population: Flakes and Grossness) when I land. This is my regular night cream when I'm at home, but the fact that the container is only one ounce makes it easy to bring on board too. It's not greasy, it sinks in quickly (so you don't look like an oil slick in public), and a little goes a long way. $20 at MarioBadescu.com

3. Avon Dew Kiss Lip Dew lip balm: My fiance's mother bought me some of this for Christmas once, and it's the best lip balm I've ever come across. I told her so and she immediately bought me about five more tubes, which means I'm pretty much now set for life. It's thick and rich and it smells delicious. My lips dry out quickly on the plane, which means it's important to keep them as moisturized as possible. I almost never fly without this balm. 99 cents at Avon.com

4. Benefit Ooh La Lift Instant Under-Eye Brightening Boost: This is a fairly new product in my arsenal, and I'm excited to test how well it'll work on my TWENTY TWO HOUR flight to Singapore on Thursday, because I've a feeling the bags under my eyes are going to be so big that I'll be asked why I didn't check them with the rest of my luggage. As well as being pleasantly cool on a very delicate area of skin---right underneath your eye---it also works some sort of minor miracle in making you look like you got eight very pleasant hours of sleep lying horizontally, rather than thirty seven minutes with a rabid toddler kicking the back of your seat every five seconds. $20 at Sephora or Benefit.com

5. Evian Spray Brumisateur (Travel Size): This is a product I've traveled with since my days of flying alone, aged eleven, from England to Hong Kong to see my parents: I guess old habits die hard. (Or maybe I'm just still stuck in the 90s, who knows?) The jury is out on whether it's actually particularly effective to mist your face with water from a spray can whenever you want to feel a little more awake and refreshed during (or after) a plane ride, but boy oh boy, is it fun anyway. Plus it has a seriously fancy name. Brumisateur? How could you resist something called Brumisateur? $5.50 at Drugstore.com

I just purchased five tubes. THAT is how much I trust you, Holly Burns. Also it's like $.99 so it's all good and if I hate it, I can send it to you. Win/Win.

I never travel with without my Avon Glycolic Peel Pads.

I developed these when I was a product developer for Avon.

My members love them too.

I used it constantly during my flight to and from Japan (round trip Los Angeles) and my skin looked AMAZING when I stepped off the plane. In fact... I don't know why I'm not still using it!!

Rosebud Salve ( http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P42204&... ) is my must-have, it's my favorite lipbalm ever.  It comes in a cute tin, it has a really faint rose scent, and it's moisturizing and shiny without being at all sticky.  It also doubles as a lotion if you're in a really desperate situation...for instance, if security confiscates your slightly-too-large lotion and your face is really, really dry and the ladies at the duty-free Clinique counter are growing suspicious of you and your repeated trips to "sample" their lotion.  It would be helpful in that completely hypothetical situation.

I'm super-psyched that you recommend the Evian spray, I always see it at Sephora and really want to try it but it just felt too frivolous.  But now that someone has suggested it, I feel completely justified in buying it.

I actually really love Clean & Clear's Oil Absorbing Sheets ( http://www.cleanandclear.com/productDetail.do?prod... ) for flying, or any sort of long car ride, too.

They take the shine off your face without the need for more powder and/or without removing all of your make-up if you happen to be wearing any. They're not perfect (sometimes I've noticed a touch of dryness if I use them too often), but they are the ideal size for even the smallest of purses or carry-ons, and with 50 sheets in one pack they will last through multiple trips.

Ah, but the wipes are for much more than just washing your face -- they're multi-purpose! And the Evian spray is more of a silly luxury than anything else -- like I said, I don't think it really CLEANS your face, it just feels refreshing to spritz it with misty water. And I don't know about you, but when I'm flying I'll take all the luxury I can get!

I'm not sure.  Of course, you want to have moisturizer and lip balm.  However, I'd really rather carry travel-size versions of my everyday products.  As for wipes, I'd rather use a wash cloth & the cleanser I carry with me anyway.  Doing so eliminates the need for that evian stuff, too.  However, I used to carry those pond's facial wipes & use them for face & otherwise
