Two Books About Strong Girls For Kids

Reading stories about strong girls isn’t just important for little girls but younger boys as well. Having two boys myself, I love finding books that teaches them girls can be strong independent people. They can do anything boys can because girls rock, too! This week I’m highlighting two such books:
- Players In Pigtails by Shana Corey; illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon
- The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas by Tony Wilson; illustrated by Sue deGennaro
Did you know there was an All American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s? Girls from all over America came together to play baseball. Shana Corey imagines one of the girls who didn’t fit the mold of the “typical” girl but proved herself by playing baseball, despite being made fun of and discouraged by others. When my son and I read it together, he said, “Mom, those people were pretty mean. Girls can play baseball if they want to.”
A fun fact: One of America’s favorite songs, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” was written about a girl!
JENNY SAYS: Players in Pigtails shows young girls and boys that despite how society may expect them to act, girls can do anything they want to. With wonderful illustrations and an inspiring (and fun) story, this book is an absolute home run!
Prince Henrik is supposed to marry a “princess” but all he wants is someone who likes camping and hockey. So he devises a plan where he puts a packet of frozen peas beneath the mattresses rather than a single pea (which he brother did). When an old friend returns who isn’t a princess, Prince Henrik has to decide if he’s going to do what is expected of him or follow his heart.
JENNY SAYS: An adorable twist on a classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas shows both boys and girls that girls who are comfortable being themselves are so much better than silly ones who only worry about their looks. As my son put it, “They fell in love because they’re friends.” What more could you ask of a book?
