Two days down...a lifetime to go...

So...my aunt experienced her first weekend in her new home.  Amazingly, after her first night there on Friday, which was anything but peaceful, she has remained calm...she still wants to go home...repeatedly asking for a taxi...but, she is pleasant and calm.
Based upon input from the clinical staff, we have not gone to visit her yet.  Once she calmed down, the staff's fear was that seeing my dad and myself would just wind her back up and create agitation.  If all goes well today, my dad will be going to visit.  God, I hope it goes well...he doesn't deserve to have her spewing venom on him...

This is all such new territory for us...I have no knowledge of assisted living...what the environment is like or even what to expect.  The hospitalization, court hearing and transfer to the facility all sort of came up quickly...I didn't have the chance to really learn about what she would need there.  A note for anyone else going through this...moving into an assisted living facility is not like moving into skilled nursing (aka nursing home).  It's almost like moving into a studio apartment...there's a bedroom, a kitchenette and a bathroom...the facility my aunt is in does not provide toiletries, kitchen supplies or basic things like toilet tissue, paper towels or cleaning supplies...or even a pillow.

I quickly pulled together some of her things from home...photos, clothes, paintings...to provide some familiarity and, hopefully, help her feel more at home...if that would even be possible.  But...I left out some things...the facility is loaning us furniture until I can get movers in to get items from her home.  She still needed things like her bedspread, pillow, basic things like dishtowels and dishclothes and a soap dish.  I made a mad dash to Walmart to stock up...

It was interesting to sneak over to the facility and meet one of the nurses behind the building to give her the items and ask her to set everything up for my aunt...in all honesty, it was a bit of a relief to not have to see her while she is so fragile and ready to blow at any minute...

So, onward and upward...this week will probably be crazy...I'll be attending a meeting in Washington DC for work and then on to NYC for the Blogher Writer's Conference...kind of looking forward to being focused on other things for a change...
