Two New Tools for Bloggers

There are a couple of new tools out for bloggers that you may want to try out. The first is Zemanta, which is meant to help you generate content for your blog posts. The other is Echo. Echo is a brand new beta release that you embed in your site to replace the site's old commenting system.

Zemanta is a Firefox add-on. (Download the add-on for Firefox) It works with every blogging platform and in Gmail and Y!Mail.

When installed, a Zemanta pane appears next to your blog post window. As you type your post, relevant images, links or tags are suggested based on what you are writing about. You can also search Zemanta for images or articles.

There is no need to register to use Zemanta, but as you can see from viewing it in the Wordpress admin area of my blog, the Zemanta tools in the Wordpress Dashboard urge you to register and log in.

using Zemanta on a Wordpress blog

The image shows Zemanta in use. I searched on Hillary Clinton and found the photo you see. I simply dragged it from the Zemanta pane into my post window. You see other things suggested by Zemanta based on the words I was typing. It also suggests articles and tags. I didn't find the article links particularly helpful, but perhaps it was because of the material I was writing about or the fact that I hadn't entered much content yet.

When you use Zemanta, you must agree to display the Zemanta logo with the content you find through them. And you have to agree not to change the size, scheme or format of any content they suggest. I used the photo of Hillary Clinton in a post and didn't see any Zemanta logo, but there is a logo if you copy material to quote. For a post on my blog that was created while using Zemanta, my readers can now click the Zemanta logo (a small plus sign in a box) and use it to quote a paragraph from my blog.

a paragraph made rebloggable by Zemanta

Run your cursor over the paragraphs in A trial of the Zemanta Firefox Add-on and you'll notice the paragraphs highlighted in blue and a small Zemanta icon at the end of the paragraph. Clicking that icon allows you to "reblog" the highlighted text, with full attribution back to my blog. There's also a Reblog link with the Zemanta plus sign logo at the end of the entire post, which allows your readers to pick all or part of your post to quote. Readers can post (with a link and attribution) to their own blog automatically or can copy the HTML to paste into their own blog.

If you don't want to download and install Zemanta, you can try out the Interactive Demo on the Zemanta site. I pasted in the text of Old People are So . . . for a trial run.

trying out the Zemanta demo

The image results were pretty good. Lots of famous names and images available. The suggested articles were not helpful. The suggested tags were simply a rehash of the names in the post.

Here's how Zemanta appears in Gmail.

Zemanta in Gmail

Easy, right? Now, who will save me from all the emails with LOLcats pasted into the mail with the help of Zemanta?

Some bloggers (and email users) are going to love this add-on. These are bloggers who write about politics, news, culture, and other widely-distributed and documented topics. Zemanta returns decent help for those type of topics. It turns out that the more you type, the more content you provide, the better job Zemanta can do to help you. Check it out for yourself. It's very easy to use if you find it relevant.

At Sherrisax is Out There, Sherri describes reactions of her students to Zamanta in With 100’s of social media platforms, which do you choose to use?

Zemanta: This free Firefox add-on download that offers related web content — both text and visuals — that can help bloggers link and use valuable online information. “Zemanta is a great assistant for bloggers because it is easy to use, cuts down research time and enables content producers to enrich their publications with just a few clicks.” — Alisa Guan “I’m interested in checking out Zemanta to help me upgrade my blog. The suggested articles could help me give a more informed and useful opinion.” — Angelica Maduell

I've been using it and have found a couple images to be helpful in blog posts. For the most part it doesn't give me anything relative to what I'm talking about though.

From what I understand about the content is that is' is free use content and the copyright info is placed on it (it does for the images anyway haven't used any of the other stuff.)

My company and personal blogs both use Dot Net Nuke for our blogging engines. I am checking it out to see if Echo will work with DNN.

Has anyone here had experience with using Dot Net Nuke and Echo?

I had zemanta installed a couple months ago, and it was really a pain in the neck, it was in my dashboard of my WP installation something I didn't know would happen but it does if you install the add-on, and I never used a thing from it.

I also think that if you write your own content, which hopefully most people do, you are just as well not using it. I don' think it's really much if an idea generator, it's an aggregator which almost seemed a little spammy or like a splog which steals people posts and passes them round to others.

Echo sounds interesting, there is something called back track which does the something similar, it's not as advanced but then again it is a great place for people who want to stalk you to follow you all around the net.

I like my word press comment system it  threads and doesn't have a large load time so many of the java script things create, for me the least amount of java script in my blog the more secure it is, so I hesitate putting in things like that.

If blogging was my business it would be a different story. I think those who blog as their life's work would find somethig like echo useful.

I've use Haloscan for comments on my blogger blog for years. It kept down span and gave the comments a feel I liked better, but I'm really interested to try the new Echo.

If it installs as easily as Haloscan did -even I can do it. And widening the discussion is just what I'm looking for.

Zemanta? I'll have to play with. If it really slows up Firefox much than I won't be using it.

I don't have it to a test worthy state on Web Teacher yet. I'm traveling and haven't been able to work with getting previous comments imported. Home soon and then back to work on testing it.

Virginia, you are still my guru! Zemanta didn't impress me when I tried it a while back. Like you, I got screwy results. But I'm also leery ot taking shortcuts when it comes to doing research. That's why I frequenty run the same search term through multiple search engines when I'm researching something important.

But Echo sounds really interesting. I had been wondering when someone would come up with a trackback system that incorporates social media. Sounds as if this might be it.

Thanks for the informative post.

I'm still trying it out. That idea about a sandbox installation of Wordpress is a great one. :)

I've long since uninstalled Zemanta.  I didn't find the suggestions all that relevant to my content.  I also suspect that the plugin slows down Firefox considerably, even when you are not using it.  I had some latency issues that just cleared up when I got rid of the plugin.

Echo sounds pretty easy to install.  Times like this I keep kicking myself for not yet installing a "sandbox" of WP so I can play with stuff like this before installing on my blog in production.

Thanks for the reviews :)

I have to admit that, based on what I'm reading, I'm really hesitant about Zemanta. What about the copyright for the images/other content that people will be putting on their blogs through Zemanta? Is anyone going to bother checking to see if the owner of the image/other content has granted permission to use the image, and if so, what specific rights have been granted? Does Zemanta grab info on the copyright for each image or content? Or is this just going to make theft that much easier?

I think I'll check it out. Seems useful - especially for images - I sometimes waste way too much time searching for the perfect images.
