A unanimous jury brought back its decision in 37 minutes: Scott Roeder is guilty of the murder of Dr. George Tiller, who was one of the few U.S. providers of late-term abortion.

The Associated Press has the raw video:

Robin Abcarian of the Los Angeles Times has the story:

In a trial that never became the referendum on abortion that some abortion foes wanted, Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old airport shuttle driver, was convicted today of murdering George Tiller, one the nation's few physicians who performed late-term abortions.

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for only 37 minutes. Roeder faces life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder.

Roeder also was convicted on two counts of aggravated assault for threatening to shoot church ushers Keith Martin and Gary Hoepner as he fled Reformation Lutheran Church after murdering Tiller.

Whether Roeder shot Tiller at point-blank range in the forehead at Tiller's church in Wichita last May was never at issue; Roeder had admitted it to reporters, in court filings and finally to a jury on Thursday. He also said he had been stalking Tiller since at least 1999.

When Tiller was shot May 31, 2009, bloggers both pro-choice and pro-life reacted with horror:

"Oh my fucking god," blogged Cara of Feministe. "Dr. Tiller was one of the few late-term abortion providers in the country. He had previously been shot, his clinic burnt down, harassed by ideological anti-abortion attorney generals, and threatened with death countless times. We've written about his many trials and tribulations here numerous times. Still, Dr. Tiller continued to provide abortions to women who desperately needed them, to save their own lives or health, or due to tragic fetal deformities. He put the health of women above his own life. And now he is dead."

"This is terrible news," blogged Barbara of MommyLife. "Sure to be used to paint millions of peaceful pro-lifers as rabid hate-mongers. *sigh* Pro=life organizations were swift in condemning the act." Barbara linked condemnations from pro-life organizations Susan B. Anthony List, Family Research Council, and the National Right to Life Council.

...is always the same.  It seems much like a terrorist group in their "propaganda."  their response is always the same..."I had to stop him,.  He was murdering." Then the murdereer become a martyr in his circle.... But I always wonder why  they do not see that they are doing the exact same thingthey say they are a gainst.    They are taking life and murdering.

Somehow they feel that their vengeance is justified to prevent more killing...even as they are doing more killing.

I have deep felelings on this issue and have done a great deal of art around this issue.  When Dr. Tiller was murdered,  I sent a photo of one of my pieces called 'I am not Guilty" to NOW Kansas...it speaks to choice and then the mysogeny of women over time and and is of a woman who is alive...and is being taken off the cross by other women ..as they say in Chorus "We are not Guilty."  Obviously this art is very controversial in some circles...but it has been very healing to many.

I will say this as a Christian, mother, woman, writer.

I am glad they got the verdict right. I cannot stand to see my religion used as an excuse for hate.

But a good one I think, as it contains several condemnations of this horrible murder from many prominent pro-life activists.

You are so articulate. ...I've read and heard your opinion voiced repeatedly by women bloggers in the pro-life community. Another great example: Barbara from MommyLife.net, who is quoted above from my BlogHer post the day of the shooting.

And yet at the same time, I've read some horrible, murderous comments on blogs, Facebook and Twitter. So if you have other links you want to share from the "mainstream pro-lifer", I welcome them here. Thanks.

No one could ever convince me that there is ever a situation that warrants abortion.  I find it morally reprehensible.  THAT SAID, this viscious murder of a doctor who provided abortions, however vile and abhorrent any abortion but especially late term abortions may be, is just as horrifying to me, just as morally reprehensible.  Murder is NEVER an option; taking a life is NEVER OK.

I find it absolutely disgusting that (a very few) people justify murder under the guise of being "pro-life".  Give me a break!  Talk about the ultimate hypocrisy!

Not only does this destroy the families involved (both the victim's and the perpetrator's) but it presents this image that people who support the right to life are religious fanatics who think God tells them to kill people.  It's such a shame that some people will point to this to describe the feelings/actions of a main stream pro-lifer.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

I hope they throw the book at this guy.  His actions were vile.

The fact that the law is such that Tiller even had a shot at making a case to justify his actions is very disturbing.  When someone kills a man because he believes he is a killer (and the man is not a killer under the law), this should never see the courtroom.

It also urks me he will go to his grave believing he is a martyr, not a cold blooded killer.

From the NYT ( http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/30/us/30roeder.html... ):

"Mr. Roeder had developed such strong feelings about his religious faith and against abortion that he had ultimately felt compelled to shoot Dr. Tiller."

I have a lot of strong feelings, too, but that doesn't mean I am compelled to kill people who commit acts that I disagree with.  Further, the attempt of the defense and others like him to negotiate this down to a lesser charge than murder shows what they really feel about life: If they don't agree with you, you don't have a right to life.

I'm glad that Roeder was held accountable for his heinous actions.
