Until you know, you don't know

I have been an avid reader my entire life. From the time I was a little girl I loved nothing more than to curl up with a good book.  I remember begging my parents to let me stay up just a little bit longer to finish one more chapter.  When I thought they were safely back downstairs or fast asleep I would turn on the light by my bed and read some more.

My love of reading stayed with me as I grew. I still devour books – often reading an entire book in one sitting. But despite my love of reading, I never gave much thought to the process behind getting a book published or selling a book.  That is until I began writing DANGLED CARAT
.

As I traveled the road to publication I learned so much. But there was one part that shocked me.  Reviews!

I never realized how important reviews were for books.  Sure, I figured that reviews could be a deciding factor in a person’s choice to buy or not buy a book.  But I didn’t realize that reviews help authors get recognition.  Positive reviews are part of the algorithms that book sellers use when rating a book.  Sales are not the only factor. Reviews are equally as important.  Go figure!  Also books that have reviews have a better chance of showing up as recommendations when you search online, thus allowing you to discover new authors and authors new readers.

Reviews are equally important for New York Times bestselling authors as they are for independent authors.  I didn’t realize that either.  I often visited Amazon pages of famous authors, saw reviews in the hundreds, and felt intimidated.  Why would my review matter, I thought.  So I didn’t leave one.  Wow, was I wrong!

Every review counts, even if it is a very short one.

I have since gone back to my blog and cross posted every book review I have done over the years to both Amazon and Goodreads.   I also wrote a few new ones for books I read recently, which were still fresh in my mind.  I vowed that going forward, after I read a book that I enjoy, I am going to help an author out and write a review.

Do you write reviews for books you enjoy?
