Updated: Chino Hills Earthquake Being Reported on Twitter
by Denise

We're seeing a flurry of tweets indicating there was an earthquake in San Diego - nothing on the "news" yet - but our very own Erin Kotecki Vest gave us the scoop.

Chino Hills

The 5.8 quake was centered in Chino Hills, 29 miles from downtown LA.  It was also felt in San Diego.  The USGS has just added it to it's list of earthquake activity.  As a native Californian, I've learned to go to their site for accurate information on quake magnitude and epicenter.

Re earthquake

The earthquake is actually in the LA area, not San Diego. CalTech is reporting it as a 5.4, downgraded from 5.8, and the epicenter is in Chino Hills, which is ~29 miles southeast of downtown LA.

Twitter came in really handy

Twitter came in really handy when we in the Midwest had a moderate earthquake this spring. Hope you and yours are safe.

We're safe and home

We've lost a few pictures off the wall, and some years off my life as I tried to reach my Mother and kids in a sea of video games....but we're fine.

A good reminder for everyone to have their emergency kits ready in their cars and homes.

Crazy!

My daughters and I were eating lunch when it struck. Gathered them up, and my oldest kind of panicked and didn't want to move. It was a strong one, and we are at least half an hour from Chino.

Glad these things don't happen all of the time, and glad everyone (seems to be) safe and okay!

Rolling Quake

Pretty scary when it happened! I work in Burbank, and everyone was pretty freaked out. It was my first experience with a big quake. For some reason, every time an earthquake hit, I would be either in my car or asleep. This one felt like a rolling one. One small roll and then another long one! It's like a roller coaster ride after you've already started feeling sick and just want it to end.

My fiance's dad and stepmom live in Chino Hills, the epicenter, and they said rocks fell around them outside. A friend of mine who works in an all-glass building in Hollywood says everyone went home, while my fiance who also works in a glass building in West L.A. says everything is fine. And my mother who lives in Claremont says she had some glass objects fall to the ground and break. I'm home now in downtown Los Angeles, and no damage for me, as far as I can see.

blogged the earthquake

Like Erin, I think I lost a few years off my life trying to grab my toddler and newborn and stuff us all under the table. So scary. I happened to have all my twitter apps off and so my instinct afterwards to blog it.
