  1. Will 2012 Be the Year We Lose "Mom" as the Go-To Modifier?

Good Riddance "Baby Bump"Not only did this phrase join a set of other annoying expressions and words banished at the end of 2011, its prominent position on the list made me wonder if 2012 might just be the year when "mom" gets knocked off the top of the go-to modifier list. It's been "soccer mom" this and "grizzly mom" or "tiger mom" that for too freaking long. Enough already! There's more to being a female in modern society than "momming"-- has it really become a verb, too?  Apparently.  Read more >

  2. Moving On to A Magical Life

If someone had told me 10 years ago that I would have a magical life after infertility, I probably would have decked them. Such was my anger and despair over the loss of a fragile but long-held dream and more than a decade of trying, fruitlessly, to conceive with the man I adore. I was bitter, broken and inconsolable.  Read more >

  3. What Betty Ford Taught Me

"It was like going to a party you're terrified of, and finding out to your amazement that you're having a good time." That's how Betty Ford, who passed away today at 93, described her life in the White House during one of the most turbulent times in U.S. history. I was only 10 years old when she became First Lady. I didn't fully appreciate, until I was older, how much she influenced my life. She didn't shy away from her struggles, she talked openly about them.  Read more >

  5. Are You Courageous?

"Courage is from the Latin word, cor, meaning heart — the original definition was to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart." *  Read more >

  6. Who is Your Michelango?

A recent story in the New York Times under the header "Sustainable Love" prompted me to think about how we develop and change as individuals, and gave me insights into how to further shape the mosaic that is now moi<  Read more >

  7. Aunt to the Rescue for "The Talk"

    Sex Education

It didn't take keen skills of observation to see that my niece was exhibiting early signs of puberty. That I only see her one or two weeks out of the year only underscored the change in her appearance. Why the infrequent visits? She lives in Dublin, Ireland, and I live in the San Francisco Bay area.  Read more >

  8. How We Have Yet to Change

It may be 2010, but in one very big way we're still locked in the past. It took Gail Collin's book, When Everything Changed, to make me see how we have yet to change.  Read more >

  9. Invisibility -- Seen it Lately?

"The minute you retire, it's as if you're invisible." I had to do a double-take when I read that sentence in an article about how difficult it is to get Stanford profs to make space for younger faculty.  Read more >

  10. My Father, My Prom King

Despite being a funny looking, gangly slip of a girl,  my dad made me believe I was the most beautiful, bright daughter a father could ever want. He encouraged me to reach high, and celebrated every victory no matter how small. He engaged in the usual dad activities -- teaching me to ride a two-wheel bike, running behind me for several hours hanging onto my banana seat until I found my balance, and helping me with my homework.  Read more >
