  1. A Springtime Wish

As the snow begins to melt and the sun begins to shine several thoughts run across my mind. One is the inevitable ten pounds from winter hibernation and begin to focus on all of the things I hate about me. I am guilty about making jokes about my muffin-tops, dingle dangles, and wobbly bites all of the things I wish I could airbrush away.  Read more >

  2. A Distant Memory and a Pair of Red Pumps

Sometimes when I slip on my red pumps they take me back to a different person, time, and place. If these shoes could take me back into the past I wonder would I do things a little different? Would I be wiser to the games of the heart?  Read more >

  3. A Skier's Dream

XC Ski by Szymon Nitka via Flickr

The first heavy snow fall always reminds me of my father. It was his belief the first snow was one that would determine the winter for cross-country skiing. He dreamed of the fresh powder which allowed you to glide with ease across the open trails in the winter time. After a really good storm we would tie our skies to back of the car and drive off to the ski club. At that age I didn’t appreciate the beauty, the silence, or the fresh scent of pine cones along the trail. My poor father would hear the lamenting of a ten-year old complaining of cold feet and ice-cold cheeks.  Read more >

  4. Snow Forts and Blogging

Since the first seasonal snowfall my children have developed a one track mind to build the perfect snow fort. They come home from school with anticipation of building a snow fort that has seats, a bowling alley, and somewhere to fit a big screen TV. It is when they are in the planning stages it makes me think how this snow fort is similar to the many stages of blogging. They both take time, thought, and creativity. It is the creation of a vision that sometimes crumbles and other times takes on a life form of its own.  Read more >

  5. Lego Tears

As I toiled in the laundry room chained to the dryer attempting to match the pile of socks that were growing by the minute. My littlest came running down the stairs in tears. His heart once again broken someone had smashed his newest Lego creation to pieces. I held him tight and told him it would be okay. It is with that I stopped what I was doing held his hand and we walked up the stairs to pick up the crumbling pieces on the floor. I looked at him with a smile, "Lets try to rebuild it!" He gave me a sad look, "I can't! It took me hours!"" "Well! What was it that you made?"  Read more >

  6. The Tradition of Early Morning Hockey

The tradition of early morning hockey is a staple of our fall and winter routine. You wake at the crack of dawn, bundle up, grab the mountainous bag of equipment, and enjoy the cold drive to the rink. It is this early morning wake-up which is torturous for my little seven-year old who would prefer to sleep in the comfort of his warm bed. At six o'clock on Saturday morning I slowly rustle him out of bed. The tears begin to stream, he rolls back into bed. "I don't want to go! I'm so tired!"  Read more >

  7. The Comfort of Apple Crisp

It's one of those times you try to stay busy as you flow about the kitchen avoiding politics, sex, and religion. You listen quietly attempting to make polite conversation. You make a simple joke and receive raised eyebrow. You open the cupboard and the Tupperware explodes out across the floor. The facade of the good housewife has been revealed and you get the burning look of disapproval. It's these looks that tell you that you were never quite suitable, never approved of, and never will be a member of their inclusive tribe.  Read more >

  8. What if?

My oldest son is in Grade 4 we have a two-minute walk to the elementary school. I have been trying to give him more freedom. I wondered is it time to let him walk to school by himself? I just feel that there are so many what if's? What if someone snatches him? What if a careless driver fails to see him crossing the street? What if there is a bully lurking in the corner? What if? What if?  Read more >

  9. The Return to School with Two: Do We Coddle the Youngest?

    school

The breeze was cool as I walked my two little men to school. I was in disbelief that the summer was over and they were growing up before my very eyes. My oldest was going in grade four he ran ahead with excitement while my youngest entering grade two had straggled behind with trepidation.I balanced my stride in the middle between two the two attempting to look back and forward at the same time. I admired how tall they grown and how independent they had become over the summer. It was this morning my oldest helped cook the eggs and my youngest tied his sneakers with pride.  Read more >

  10. The Cougar on Display

It was a hot sunny day and I opted for the coolness of new maxi dress. It was the best option for a lady who did not want to shave her legs and look somewhat put together. I put it on, grabbed my sunglasses, wrangled up the kids, and off we went for a family road trip to the zoo. As we drove along my husband gave me a wink, "Nice to see the girls!" "What?" "The girls!" I looked in the mirror and didn't realize how low-cut my halter dress actually was and gasped! My girls were giving a show and it was not appropriate zoo attire. It was also too late to change!  Read more >
