  2. The Russia Speech The President Should Have Given

Posting this two weeks after the speech, in an era of instant news, would seem a little OBE, except for articles like John Vinocur's Central and Eastern European Countries Issue Rare Warning for U.S. on Russian Policy in today's New York Times.  Mr.  Read more >

  3. When Needs the KGB When We Do It to Ourselves?

I finished The Doves on 30 June 2009:  stopped making changes, diddling, froze the text.  I had wanted a complete draft by 30 June; instead, I had a completed book.  So my husband and I then went into town:  some bourbon for him, some rosé for me, some some meat and veggies and fruit, including two pounds of fresh figs.  I am surprised I have not yet eaten all of them.  Read more >

  4. The Doves, and a Look Back

I began writing The Doves, my love & war story about an American defense engineer who, disgusted by the systemic corruption of American defense contracting, received a clandestine offer from the Russian Army to develop tactical ground combat sensors and moved to Russia in order to accept it honestly, in November 2008.  Read more >

  5. On Torture

I've been following, at a distance, the "debates" on torture.  Since I'm in a race against time to finish (in draft ) The Doves by May 31 (I finished Chapter 19 yesterday), I've pretty much punched out of current events.  My husband, the writer Philip Gold, sends me articles he thinks I should read, such as this one on Russian death squads  Read more >

  6. The Iowa Supreme Court Decision & Same Sex Marriage

Back in December, I wrote, Gay Marriage is a Human Right, Not a Religious Issue and rooted my argument in the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution and then to a lesser extend, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with its provision that marriage and procreation are fundamental human rights.   Read more >

  7. Economic Citizenship: The Political Economy of Handknitting

Of Economic Citizenship:  The Political Economy of Handknitting If America is to survive, We the People must rediscover how to be We the People.  Which means: citizens.  Which means: responsible members of this civilization.  Which means: citizenship is more than a legal status and a set of rights and entitlements.  It requires living and acting responsibly in the political, economic, social and cultural realms that, several generations of so-called social scientists to the contrary, cannot be separated.  Read more >

  8. The Political Economy of Cowardice and the Russian Connection

Run yesterday in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.    Guest Columnist: The political economy of cowardice and the Russian connection ERIN SOLARO "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."  Read more >

  9. Valkyrie: Tom Cruise's Unwanted Masterpiece

Valkyrie:  A Wonderful Gift No One Wants Valkyrie is rich movie, proud and dark and grieving, offered as a gift to a nation hanging by a thread, at the time of year when it seems even the sun itself can be defeated, not only a terrific thriller but a richly nuanced masterpiece of moral and emotional complexity.  Read more >

  10. Women and Guns

In a previous post, I mentioned that I voted for Obama, then went out and bought a handgun.  First handgun that is mine, not my husband’s.  Yesterday, I went shooting for the first time in approximately 12 years, and shot a handgun for the first time in at least 15.  Took me a while to go to the range, because when you buy a handgun, sooner or later you expect to have the serious intention of putting metal into a huma  Read more >

About Me:

I blog at Somewhere Else to Go and The Woman Citizen, which started out as heavily military and defense policy oriented.  (They grew out of my first book, Women in the Line of Fire:  What You Should Know about Women in the Military, Seal Press, 2006).  Since, my work has become increadingly cultural and political, while I still maintain a serious interest in military issues.  I now write about what it means to be a woman and a citizen, especially in these dangerous times.
