  1. Summer Break Is Coming: Get Outside -- on Bikes -- with Your Kids!

    family biking

Spring is here and time to head back outdoors again. One of the best ways my family enjoys the outdoors is on bikes. For Earth Day three years ago, I posted about getting out your bikes and checking on Rail Trails on TrailLink, sponsored by the Rails-To-Trails Conservancy. Back then, my daughter was five years old and usually rode (slept) in a bike trailer. Now we’ve ventured into mountain biking as family. We don’t live in an area that is safe to bike in the streets, so my 8-year-old daughter has only ridden her bike in our driveway. When I suggested that we hit the rail trail this year, she was a bit anxious about the narrowness of the trail and the number of people zipping by.  Read more >

  2. How the Violin Touched Multiple Generations in My Family

Although my parents never played musical instruments, I grew up learning the piano and then played flute and clarinet in bands in orchestras through school. Music was an important part of my life and I had always hoped that my children would also find joy in learning to play an instrument. When I was thirteen, I took violin lessons along with my piano studies. For whatever reason, I disliked the violin because I had already mastered two instruments and didn’t have the gratification of instantly being able to master a third.  Read more >

  3. Introducing Kids to Classical Music

    kids classical music

In typical Asian mom fashion, I’ve enrolled my children in both piano and violin lessons to pass on the stereotype that I had been brought up with. In my case, it has blossomed into a life-long love, where I have enjoyed both playing and listening to classical music to this day. I’ve seen cases where this has back-fired, where my friends had hated practicing, only to return to it later in life. My kids are temperamental and picky about music just like any other kid, but hopefully I’ve introduced classical music into their lives in a positive way.  Read more >

  4. Helping My Daughter Overcome Her Fear of New Situations

    Angela's daughter

When my daughter was in preschool, every morning was a tearful goodbye due to her separation anxiety.  Nowadays, she is well-adjusted seven-year-old with confident and sassy demeanor.  But once in a while, when faced with a new situation, she will still become extremely anxious.  Anxious to the point of being completely helpless in controlling her fears.  These are moments where I question my abilities to guide her through her troubles.  Moments that if I screw up, she might grow up to be paralyzed when faced with change.  Thankfully, we’ve successfully navigated through these situations so far.  Read more >

  5. A Labor Story for Labor Day

    labor day

As part of Discovery Channel’s Baby week two years ago, I wrote about my son’s delivery.  This was a long, arduous vaginal birth of a huge 9 pound 8 ounce baby boy.  Not all deliveries are traumatic or occur under extreme circumstances.  My second birth went surprisingly smoothly, but that doesn’t make it any less of a miracle or the experience anything less than magical. Besides, Labor Day deserves a good labor story.  Read more >

  6. Stamp Collecting: Is It Still a Valid Hobby for Your Kids?

    Stamp Collecting

In a time not so long ago, snail mail was the cheapest way to contact or stay in touch with someone. When I was growing up, my mother received postcards from around the world requesting reprints of her scientific articles. When I went to college, I wrote letters on actual paper and mailed them to my high school friends. Sure, these days communications are instant and with cell phones and the internet, but there are no charming mementos to hold on to afterward.  Read more >

  7. Feeling Secure with a Home Security System

Last year, our local news burst with a story of several teens who broke into a random house in the middle of the night, hacking up a mother and her eleven-year-old daughter up with a machete, and leaving them for dead.  The daughter survived the attack but her mother did not.  This was an incredibly shocking story for the quiet New England town that is less than 20 miles from our house.  Read more >

  8. May I Have this Contra Dance?

    Contra Dancing

In a time not so long ago, there were group folk dances that people went to, where you could go to have a great time dancing in synchrony with friends, family and strangers.  Dancing nowadays mostly consists of going to loud and dark clubs and “doing your own thing.”  While individual dancing is can be fun, the structure of a group dance puts you into a part of a whole, something that we’ve lost along the way.  Read more >

  9. How to Make a Lattice Crust Pie

    Lattice Pie Crust

Besides eating pie, I have made pies for years. At first, I made pie crusts from scratch and when I “graduated” to pre-made crusts, it afforded me the opportunity to get more creative. The lattice pie crust has always been a great hit, but it is often a mystery to people as to how it’s made. Now it is a mystery no more.  Read more >

  10. How to Avoid Falling Asleep While Driving

    Drowsy Drivers Road Sign

There are so many dangers while driving, from driving under the influence to texting while driving, but let’s not forget the age old problem that can happen to anyone -- falling asleep while driving.  While drunk driving and texting are issues that people are well aware of, where legislation and law enforcement have stepped in, falling asleep while driving can happen to anyone and is just as dangerous.  Read more >
