  1. "The child is father to the man"

“The child is father to the man”, said William Wordsworth, and so sang Blood, Sweat and Tears.Children teach more than their own fathers.  Children at a shelter type facility have taught me a lot. It was late at night, they arrived without luggage, without even an extra pair of shoes amongst them. The youngest of three children clutched a toy, it was a plastic castle. She refused to let it go.  Read more >

  2. A mother's day message for less than perfect, but perfectly good mothers

In my practice the Monday after Mother’s Day is always the toughest. The mothers who come to therapy are not happy. Their ungrateful children and non supportive husbands, at least by definition today, ignored the day. They would have been thrilled to get half cooked eggs complete with bits of egg shell, cold coffee and burned toast, or a small gift, or a hand written card, or three words on facebook, a phone call, a text, ANYTHING!! But nothing. No acknowledgement.  Read more >

  5. Olivia the flowergirl

You see we went to the wedding. I was an outdoors wedding in Washington State, in April so you know how much we prayed.  It was such a celebration. But during the ceremony, even though my own dear husband was the celebrant and the groom especially dear, and I would add we were surrounded by fantastic friends Olivia caught my eye. I hope you will flip through the show to see why.    Read more >

  8. How to go from a columnist to a novelist: Elena Martina did it

The first thing you notice about Elena Martina’s facebook page https://www.facebook.com/author.elenamartina#!/author.elenamartina is her enthusiasm. She offers cheery chats and helps to other writers. Not surprisingly her column is titled, Happy Living One Day at a Time. As Elena was born in Peru, South America Spanish was her first language. 10. New York's Irish American community rallies around an ordinary boy in an extraordinary way.

A few days ago I read a column in the Irish Central online version. The author Niall O’Dowd said it was the hardest column he had ever written. Upon reading it, myself in tears I knew why.  He wrote of coming to the United States, of his brother in law, sister and nephew following him from Ireland. Of the family settling, at full thrust into the American way of life, forever loving their Irish roots.  Read more >

Why did I write about criminals?  The answer is here.

http://writersinbusiness.blogspot.com/2011/03/psychologist-gael-mccarte-con.html

Novel, The Con is available at Amazon.com.  http://www.amazon.com/Gael-McCarte/dp/1935434535/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1295287982&sr=1-1.  It fictionalizes my work with offenders in Perth, Western Australia.  The reader has a front row seat to Aussie family life, the criminal mind, the elite schools in Perth, the upheavals caused by the mining and housing boom as tilers and carpenters now out earn physicians. It reveals bush life in Kalgoorlie the gold mining area, and the general Australian life style as it is really lived.  The book has cultural and psychological integrity and is difficult to put down while the twist in the end is impossible to predict.  Also available as an ebook https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/64328

Available in Australia from  http://www.seekbooks.com.au/book/The-Con/isbn/9781935434535.htm
